David S Relationship With His Father Is

David’s relationship with his father is really weak because his father is abusive, negative, and really strict. David’s father, joseph is very abusive towards David, he beats David violently harsh his punishment. “ I’ll deal with this. The boy’s lying’ to me he added: Go to your room’ I hesitated. I knew well enough what that meant… my father followed picking up a whip from the table as he came.” (pg 51 The Chrysalids by john Wyndham). Joseph beat David because he wouldn’t tell him about Sophie’s blasphemy. He eventually tells and his father beats him with the whip anyways. Joseph’s abusiveness makes the relationship weak because it makes it hard for David to trust him because he feels like he might get into trouble for it. Joseph also has a negative impact on David because he is taught that being different is bad. “ Others elsewhere in the house, which said things like: THE NORM IS THE WILL OF GOD, AND REPRODUCTION IS THE ONLY HOLY PRODUCTIONM, AND THE DEVIL IS THE FATHER OF DEVIATIONS, and a number of others about offences and blasphemies.”(pg 18). Joseph hate for deviations is written all over the walls and have been up their since David’s birth. Joseph is basically saying if its not in the image of God which makes it less of a human, and that’s when the negativity comes in because it teaches David that being different is bad and God doesn’t like you. The relationship between them is very strict because joseph would punish David very harsh over the littlest mistakes. “In the night, when anguish which had followed my fathers visit was somewhat abated, I lay awake, puzzling. I had no idea of wishing for a third hand…was such a terrible thing.”(pg 27). David was punished so severally for something he had no clue was wrong, and that weakens the relationship maybe if joseph approached the situation in a less aggressive way, spoke to David, and told him why he shouldn’t wish for things
