Day in a life Essay
Day in the Life of My Pencil I finally see the light of day and it looks like it is early in the morning. I can tell that the class is supposed to write an essay. I hope that I will be used. I haven’t since he got those new pens and my value became miniscule. I feel very lonely, as all of the other pencils broke and only I remain. It appears I am the one chosen to write the essay. I have been waiting for a long time to finally do this, my moment of truth has finally arrived. There is a lot of pressure building up. I feel like I’m going to snap. I broke and I’m already too short to sharpen. He is now getting one of those fancy mechanical pencils. I am being taken to the trash now. My life is over I have been replaced.

"Three days ago I began to get worried about the story. I know I shouldn't procrastinate the way I do, but you know how it goes. When the assignment doesn’t have to be handed in for two or three weeks, or even a week, it seems like a long way off. I always excuse myself by saying that I work better under pressure, but for some reason…

I, Pencil by Leonard E. Read is an essay narrated by a wooden pencil describing its humble beginning and all about its life. The real message behind the pencil is to show how complex social coordination is. The point is to compare the creation of a pencil to social coordination. And how both are very complicated. Every part of the making process of the pencil is equally important and necessary.…

“Nine years ago I had a little brother who couldn’t walk”. I could see people’s faces get more serious. “He was a very happy kid who was determined. I was a little embarrassed to have him around me because I had to carry him everyday in a little cart. We would go out to the swamp near our house and I would try to teach him to walk. Finally, on his sixth birthday, we showed off our work to our parents. I couldn’t have been more proud and happy at the same time.” I started to tear up just a bit. “Time went by and I had this goal for him to be able to do all sorts of activities in a year. He sadly wasn’t able to do so but towards the final weeks before our deadline, I started to really push him. One day, it was raining and as we were running back to the house, I sped up. I was just trying to make him keep up with me. After a while I couldn’t see him. I went back the route I came and saw him lying their”. The class leaned in as I was about to say my last words with tears flooding my eyes. “He was…

I walked on a thin layer of ice in high school; every time someone judged me, I could hear the ice slowly cracking under my feet. My life was in a fragile and brittle state during my junior year. I didn’t have the support of my parents, nor of my closest friends at this stage of my life. My own parents, teachers, and classmates had lost faith in me; to them it seemed as if I had ruined my life and that I would no longer succeed. On the contrary, I was determined to be successful because now I had someone special looking up at me as their role model.…

I never used to write. In fact, I didn’t much like it. Little did I know that writing would become obsolete and a physiological requirement for the well being of my life. From an early age on all I did was read. I grew up in an isolated environment where books were my escape, and escape was necessary from the hardships of home. I remember being a young seven-year-old boy wearing a pillowcase around my neck fastened with a pen. I was eating animal crackers at the time, and my step dad was calling out for me. I stood up from my crouched position and raised my hand as I learned from pre-school, and said, “ I’m here daddy.” At that moment my step father grabbed me by the cape harshly compressing my trachea purposefully, shaking me back and forth with his hands around my neck as I began to choke on the appetizing cracker animal crumbs within the back of my throat. I didn’t understand at the time what was really going on. My mother came out of the room and my dad acted as if nothing happened and told me to…

While this marked improvement over my past writing, the improvements were minimal at best, albeit some areas were better than others. This essay showed harmful proclivities in my writing that seemed difficult to abandon, such as the continued usage of the word “you”, and editorializing with personal pronouns. The largest problem with this essay, however, was the absence of eloquence and sophistication in my writing. A clear lack of controlled vocabulary was present, notable in the second sentence of the essay; “... nothing screams the epitome of resilience…”, and in a later sentence; “... determined as all hell to get down.” Both sentences contain weak diction, such as “screams” and “hell”, where different, more sophisticated diction would…

I was working on a school project when I got a call from my dad saying he was coming right away to come pick me up, I remember the sheathing anger I felt arguing that no he wasn’t going to pick me up that I really needed to finish this school project. I still shake my head in dismay knowing the fact I in fact didn’t need to finish the project I just wanted to hang out with my friends. I can’t pretend that I didn’t sulk my way to my dad’s waiting vehicle that I looked at him with a scowl across my face. Nor can I wipe away from my memory the words he said next “Your sister is in the hospital, she’s lost her baby and she’s asking for you.” This complete wash of emotion that came over me the shame the concern I was mortified with myself. How could I have been so mad about my importance when my sister had just faced a devastating event? Looking up and saying “Take me to her.”…

In the past a thousand weeks, I feel like I have accomplished a great deal. As the quarter ends, I find myself reflecting not only how I have survived my fifth quarter but also what I have learned. The most important thing I have learned so far is how to become a better writer. I did not think it could really happen to me. I did not think I could handle all the work. I did not think I could actually become a better writer. Somehow, after all the hours of writing, and putting effort into my papers that I wrote in this quarter, I became a better writer. I did this because I concentrated on two very important areas. With help from an awesome teacher and my partner, I have become a better writer by improving my skills in the areas of procrastination and content.…

This essay tries to show that students are not alone. Whenever they are frustrated, there are teachers to help them. Maybe, this might be true, but I think about how many students really depend on teachers when they feel frustrated. I don’t want to be negative, but, though teachers are always sitting in their office, there are just a few students who look for them to talk about something. This is the reality, so I feel like this story is just about a utopia that we have ever dreamed. For me, teachers are still on a top of line and they are the people who I can’t approach easily because of their status. This is the reason that I was mad a little bit because the reality that I live is not in the same situation like the story.…

Mrs. Snyder passed tests out and flipped mine over when she placed it on my desk. I flip over and read the paper. It says “PARENT CONFERENCE MONDAY NIGHT AT 7:00 PM.” I looked at the grade and my heart dropped, it was a F. I hear the bell ring and I was so mad at myself I just put my test away and stomped out of the room. That night, I heard my parent’s car pull in after school. “I have to show them, I have to.” As they walk through the door, I hand my test to them and explained what happened. I felt my heart drop and felt total regret for what I did. “I’m taking your electronics away!” my mom yelled, “Go to your room. Think about your imprudent decisions!” The whole house was quiet that night. It was Monday morning, school is back already. In 1st period, Mrs. Snyder announces that there will be a new unit test next monday and there will be a study guide passed around today. Mrs Snyder comes next to my desk. “Here is a chance to redeem yourself. Don’t forget about the meeting tonight.” That night, my parents drove to the meeting. That was the worst 45 minutes of my life. They came out furious and had faces of disappointment. To my luck, there was no lecture…

I am Janelle Bautista, a college freshman, and I do not know what I am doing right now. Each year, my English teachers would give various essays, and every time the whole class had no clue what to write. Everyone would all stare at the computer screen blankly, and ponder as to where to start. However, once an idea sparks, the first sentence turns into a paragraph then it finally becomes pages long. Everyone can stare at the screen forever, but the essay will not be done unless you start writing, just like college, and life. However, life will continue whether the first step is taken or not. College and life are a long essays waiting to be written. Although college benefits those who obtain a degree, the only question that remains is what to…

This was an article written from the aspect of a wooden pencil. The pencil first starts out talking about how no one knows how to make him/her. It states that it is a mystery even more so than a tree or a sunset. It goes on to talk about even though it might look like a simple object, it is much more complex with creation. Referencing each piece used to create the pencil, then tracing its genealogy to those who made objects used for transportation, manufacturing, texturing, etc of those pieces. The pencil then talks about how no one really wants it, but many rely on it. How no one had a big hand in creation, yet each step is more important than the last. The pencil this whole article was working off the idea “If you can become aware of the miraculousness which I symbolize, you can help save the freedom mankind is so unhappily losing.” When it comes down to it, the pencil was talking about the freedoms of humans. Without that, things such as pencils would not exist. Its final message that it was presenting was “Leave all creative energies uninhibited.”…

As I step off the yellow school bus, I looked up at the big, brown brick elementary school. Kids were everywhere. I was excited. The night before, I could hardly sleep. I kept getting up every five minute, afraid I might oversleep. I felt like the big man on campus, but in reality, I was the little man on campus. I was about six years old and so tiny among the older children. I was taken to the cafeteria, where all the kids were to find their teachers and walk to their homerooms as a class. I found my teacher. She was a middle-aged Caucasian woman with blonde hair. Her name was Ms. Bishop. She was nice. The bell rung and we walked in a single file line to our classroom for the next couple months.…

It was a dreary fall day, the leaves on the ground were soaking into the mildew-covered streets and the must in the air was a sure sign that winter was going to be warm. It had been like that all week, when boredom sinks in it causes the brain to shut down. Anna and I had been watching her favorites soaps; oh yeah let's talk boredom. That was back when she used to call me friend. She was completely immersed in the love affair or whatever this weeks flavor of the month was; I managed to do what I do best, slack off. You would think a five page paper, due tomorrow, would give reason to double time; but it was way more interesting to futz with her new computer. I blame the people who created Mario, damn them it's so addicting. Shortly after Anna discovered my lack of attention to the task at hand followed by a lecture, I started to plug away at the paper.…

The first class in CIC was an English class in which every student needed to write an essay to expect our new study life. When I saw the topic I suddenly bewildered because I did not know how to start. “Where is the information? What is the form of it, an announcement or note diary?” those were the only questions that occurred to me. For nearly 10 minutes, I had just stayed on my chair. My first English in CIC called Alexandra came to me and asked me why I did not start to write. “I do not know how to write this one, my teacher didn’t tell me before.” I told her. Then she looking…
