Decision Making Analysis Discussion Summary
In good decision-making, one must consider alternatives, measuring its advantages and disadvantages. Brainstorming is important in order to forecast the outcome of each choice, with the ultimate decision of making the best decision that works for a particular situation.
For more than a half a century, Xerox has been a leader in document technology and services. It produces and sells a range of black-and-white and color printers, multifunction systems, digital production printing presses, photocopiers, and related supplies and consulting services.
In decision-making there are characteristics in managerial decisions that consist of a lack of structure, uncertainty and risk, and conflict. What I have found in the strategic video with Xerox, is that CEO Anne Mulcahy had come into the company while it was facing the possibility of bankruptcy. The former CEO forced out of office had shown a lack of structure with no contingency plan. The bankruptcy scare could have had future investors and employees questioning the structure of the company. Mulcahy had created a desktop printer division which ended up weakening in sales. Along with that, the company’s accounting practices had led to a ten million dollar fine. Mulcahy had dived into the company cutting costs within one year, and she shut down the desktop printer division that she had once created, and slashed jobs. For the characteristics of managerial decisions, there was uncertainty and risk involved because of the bankruptcy scare, and Mulcahy had taken the risk to place Xerox back on track. She put money into new technology implementing high-end color printers that are five times greater than black/white.
