The human mind is a magnificent creation. When we talk about our brains, we are talking about an ocean filled with beautiful lights that glow every once in a while. We are talking about a world that is full of life or death. We are talking about a place where you can live happily, or the complete opposite. You are how your mind functions. So when we talk about such a sensitive topic we are literally talking about a power tool. A tool that can get you to the highest gates of heaven, or the depths of hell.
Yes, it is that powerful.
When it comes to hostility and warmth, your mind can be the first, or the second. it depends on a variety of reasons. Sometimes, your mind would disobey you, causing you to doubt your existence or your importance in life, and even your personal relationships.
Ever wondered why people are always concerned about child raising? Because they are aware that a child’s mind is exactly like glass. It is clear, pure, and easy to break or preserve. That’s why children who have lived most of their lives in complete detachment where there is no affection, no warmth, no love in their lives, have higher rates of developing mental or personality disorders.
And this is where your mind can become your best companion, or your worst nightmare.
You won’t be able to relate to a person having a mental disorder unless you experienced it by living with someone who has it or worse, having it yourself.
Mental illnesses are not only a social stigma, they are considered a part-time “hell on earth”. This is why it’s so hard for mental patients to cope with life’s everyday activities because simply, they see things differently from what you see.
They function differently, their brain chemicals are different than yours. Sure, they are special but suffer deeply. Because their life revolves around living right inside of a frightening place called “The Mind”.
“A beautiful mind”, a movie directed by a person, who I personally consider a great man. Ron Howard. This movie literally puts you inside a mental patience’s life. It talks about a great mathematician noble prize winner, John Nash. He suffered from Schizophrenia, which is called the “cancer of mental illnesses”.
Ever had a really tiring day where your body feels completely out of energy? When your fingers become completely numb and you start seeing things that are not there? When you start hearing voices that are not really there, it’s because you are so exhausted your mind is sending signals for you to respond to it and get good rest.
But, oh, you only experience this when you become extremely tired. When you haven’t slept for two days or more. On the other hand, schizophrenic patients have these ghosts running through their mind even when they are full of energy and well rested.
“You think she loves you? She is trying to poison you…” what..? Who said that!
“You don’t understand! I’m trying to help you! Fast, take this dish and throw it in the garbage before she forces it into your mouth and die!” stuttering! You sweat and become nervous, you take the dish and throw it in the garbage! As you turn to your mom screaming in a furious tone “why did you try to poison me?” Standing there in surprise, your mom forms this concerned look “what do you mean sweetie..?” “You tried to poison me! I know it! I can feel it!” “Did you have a hard day today? Maybe need some res—” “NO! I’M SURE YOU TRIED TO KILL ME!”
“But she is concerned. Look what have you done...” a deep voice appears. But there is no one else in the kitchen other than you and your mom. And you turn around in fear trying to find the source for that voice. “What are you doing? You can’t find me.”
Oh my god...I’m going crazy. Stop it! Stop it please!
“Why should we stop? We are trying to help you.” No please...please. And you start crying. “Sweetie are you okay?” your mom says, touching your shoulder with a pale face.
“Mom they won’t stop! They won’t stop they are telling me you tried to kill me!”
A cold sensation takes over your whole body when you realize that no one is there and that all of the voices are in your head. You can’t seem to make them stop...you can’t go through a normal day without a demanding voice appearing in the middle of nowhere telling you to do something crazy. You walk in the park and you suddenly feel like a man is following you...you turn around and you see a man dressed in a black suit following you with a gun. You start running and screaming “HELP! HE’S TRYING TO KILL ME!” but people stare at you with surprise! There is no one following you!
Exactly. A frightening place a mind can be…especially for mental patients.
Throughout history, psychologist and philosophers tried different techniques in order to befriend this amazing mysterious organ that runs your whole body just like the wind controls the tidal wave.
It has been said that mental patients have different chemical brain balance than you. So in other words, they might access different parts of the brain that you can’t access, or vice versa.
Also, there was a myth that has been going on for years which goes with “humans only use 10% of their brain”. Only but science could knock that myth down saying that we use all parts of our brain.
But when you think about it, what if it’s true? What if we do only access 10% of our brain and that we might have more mental powers if we accessed higher than the mentioned percentage?
We might then have the ability to control mental illnesses in the far future. I believe if we work on befriending our minds we can access different parts of our brain we would never imagine we could’ve reached.
Again, trying to befriend this mysterious being is tough. It is moody, it is strong, it can be merciful and it can be a devil with flaming horns. Your brain runs you, controls you, and makes you see things differently.
“The pain of the mind is worse than the pain of the body” – Publilius Syrus
True that. When having conflicts with your mind it can lead you into madness. True how the mind can be a frightening place to live in. Though dear reader, in the end...do you believe you can control your mind?
Can you befriend this masterpiece God created and control over your whole being? I’ll leave you alone to think about that.
