“Respect in College” It’s the school year again and it’s college move-in day, all the freshmen have their lists and bags making sure they have all the necessities. There’s one thing people don’t realize what they need to bring to college: respect. I know at first it doesn’t seem to be a big deal, but in the big picture it really is. My definition of respect that it is the realization of how special and unique a person, thing, or quality is. Respect is defined as having a mutual understanding and proper treatment of another person. To respect someone is to give them the honor and courtesy as required by customs, business, obligations, etc. Respect is needed to be shown outwardly to people and your surroundings but also within your own person and can be displayed in various ways. Even if you don’t like your roommate it is their basic human right to be respected. There are little things that can be done to show your respect for one another regardless of your feelings towards the other person. You need to respect each other feelings by asking them how they feel, validating their feelings, empathizing with them, seeking understanding of their feelings, and take their feelings into consideration. It is unacceptable to just go and throw all your things all over your roommate’s or not respect their views of certain issues. You can disagree, and perhaps not want to associate with them, but you can’t take away the human right of respect. If you’re conflicting both of you should rationalize and figure out something that is beneficial for both of you. That is a key in respect, taking in consideration the feelings of the other person in
