Definition Of Honor

Today’s twenty-first century definition of honor according to Dictionary.com is, honesty, fairness, or integrity in one’s beliefs and actions. But the definition of honor has drastically changed over time. For example, in A.D 800 to the 11th century Vikings, a nomadic people from Scandinavia, had an honor code for their wives/ slave girls. The honor code they had stated that if a woman's husband/ master died that she in order to keep her name and her husband/ master's name honorable she was to be killed and then her and her husband/ master would be placed in a boat and the boat would be pushed out to sea and then shot with a flaming arrow so that she could die alongside her husband/master and accompany him on his journey to Valhalla, Which was the Viking heaven, so that they could continue to be together. Also the things that honor is associated with now are different than before. they are also different among other cultures. The modern American definition of honor is almost always associated with our American soldiers. For example on 12 May 1962 General MacArthur gave a speech called, “Duty, Honor, Country” in his speech he spoke about American soldiers. In some ways it’s kind of like how in medieval times knights were the honorable men and they were in some ways like the soldiers of their time. The difference is that knights had a different honor code than modern day soldiers. Modern day soldiers honor code has a lot to do with things you don’t put up with and things you don’t do it’s much shorter than the code of the knights. It’s more of a list of don’ts than a code of honor and on the other hand you have the knight's code.
