Dementia is a progressive brain impairment that interferers with memory and basic living functions. According to the scholarly journal, “Dementias”, dementia affects about 46 million people worldwide. Approximately 7.7 million new cases of dementia form every year. This occurs in both men and women over the age of sixty. Dementia affects patient memory, and impairs abstract thoughts and functions such as aphasia and apraxia. Along with the again process, dementia can be caused by depression, brain tumors, alcoholism, drugs, chronic lung diseases, and Parkinson’s Disease. (Ferrini, 2013) It has become aware that elders living in nursing homes are more common of obtaining a mental disorder verse elders who love at home in communities. Some of the most common mental illnesses are depression, schizophrenia, and drug/ alcohol abuse are not common among elders but cognitive impairment increases with age. Institutional care varies from nursing homes, mental institutions, and mental wards located in hospitals. Then there is community- based which is where care is taken place in community facilities such a mental health centers, private psychiatrists and psychiatric outpatient clinics, halfway houses and much more. Now it all depends on the mental disorder, prognosis, current living situation, community services, family involvement, income and the motivation to improve their situation.
Research is constantly being done all around the world about the elderly community and factors of their mental health.
