Bayard Rustin once said, “If we desire a society of peace, then we cannot achieve such a society through violence. If we desire a society without discrimination, then we must not discriminate against anyone in the process of building this society. If we desire a society that is democratic, then democracy must become a means as well as an end.” The Novella Of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, is about two men, George Milton and Lennie Small, during the Great Depression that have no money and travel together. Crooks lives away from all others and he is considered the lowest rank on the social scale of the farm. Everyone outranks him and nobody would care if he left or died. “‘You know what I can do to you if you open your trap?’ Crooks stared hopelessly at her, and then sat down on his bunk and drew into himself. She closed on him. ‘You know what I could do?’ Crooks seemed to grow smaller, and he pressed himself against the wall. ‘Yes, ma’am,’” (80). Curley’s Wife is saying that she could kill him if she wanted to and nobody would say anything about it, and that nobody would even care if he died. Crooks is very saddened by this and he thinks it is unfair. Nobody should be discriminated because of reasons like race. Discrimination is a big problem in this book and in the world as a whole. Discrimination keeps a lot of people from doing things they want to do because they are afraid other people won’t accept it because they are different. If people could get passed discrimination and let others do what they want then maybe better things could happen, both in the book and out of it. Curley is very discriminated in this book because of his race and it affects him emotionally and physically while also giving a good message in the book by showing how he is
