How Does Steinbeck Present Crooks Discrimination
Of Mice and Men Discrimination
“Discrimination has a lot of layers that make it tough for minorities to get a leg up.” -Bill Gates. In John Steinbeck’s novel, Of Mice and Men takes place during The Great Depression is 1937. In Of Mice and Men John Steinbeck uses some of his characters to show discrimination. The characters that i’m choosing to tell about the discrimination are Curley’s wife, Crooks, and Lennie. Steinbeck’s focuses are showing how discrimination was used during the early 1900’s from slavery, gender, or just people that are disliked.
Curley’s wife was discriminated from talking to anyone but Curley, because as a women in the 1930’s you wouldn't have the right to do things or talk like the men did. A quote from the book about Curley’s wife, Pg.51. In this quote George is explaining to Lennie that he shouldn’t have anything to do with her, don't look at her, or talk to her, just think about working. This is an example of how Curley’s wife is discriminated, she doesn’t have anybody to talk to and regrets marrying Curley.
In the book Crooks was a black slave who was discriminated from everything because in that time for a long time, black people were workers that work hard until they died and didn’t get payed. Slaves only got a place to stay and food to eat. Talking to Crooks, Curley’s wife said,”Well, you keep your place …show more content…
There was many ways that Lennie was being discriminated in “Of Mice and Men”. In a part of the book Lennie cried out suddenly-“don’ like this place, George. This ain’t no good place. I wanna get outa here.” This quote shows Lennie talking to George about how he hates it here because a lot of people don’t like him for what he is like. This quote clearly shows that Lennie doesn’t want to be there and is being discriminated because of the person he is because people in those days weren’t very
