Democracy Rocks With Dr. Bob Leonard Summary
The outside event that I attended was called “Democracy rocks” with Dr. Bob Leonard. Dr. Leonard is an author that writes about politics and what is going on around the country and most importantly Washington D.C. What I noticed was this was more of a talk and speak/question type of seminar. Dr. Leonard talked about a lot of things, he talked about the difference between Republicans and democrats. He said how everyone starts from a different viewpoint, and can change many times throughout their lives. He stated the main differences between them that most people do not see. He pointed out how conservatives seem to see the bad in people, while liberals see the good. This actually really made sense to me based on all of the policies that these other people in the crowd were asking. …show more content…
Going with this, Dr. Leonard brought up controversy issues going on right now with guns. He said how Democrats believe that the guns are doing the damage, they blame the guns, so they want more gun control. While the Republicans don’t want gun control, because they blame the people who are using the guns. Listening to what he was saying and hearing the people reply to this made me laugh, because he was not targeting anyone, and a lot of these people who stated they were Democrats were getting very offended and mean towards him and others because of their beliefs? I sat back and just listened to how they were replying and what Dr. Leonard had to say. I really began to understand how inconsiderate people are when it comes to their political beliefs attending this seminar. I do not understand why people get so butt hurt and upset about what people say? You do not need to get all mean and aggressive because people have other beliefs than

DR. Michael Hawes gave an informative speech on Economics, politics, pipelines and the election: as well as Canada-US relations in an increasingly complex world. He used a PowerPoint to portray his ideas and talked about topics such as roots of Canadian foreign policy, the rising impact of the U.S, free trade and North American integration, and diversification. His speech wasn’t that interesting to younger adult’s such as me because he talked a lot about politics but he was very funny keeping me entertained which is always a plus. He established a clear central thesis, although he said “this is my central thesis” and established his main points. He transitioned into each point individually and took time to explain each concept it took a long time but he didn’t shy away from all the details.…

He brought up the many accomplishments of African-Americans in the United States. He spent a lot of time referencing President Barrack Obama and the recent election. Personal involvement and interest was certainly indicated by the speaker by bringing up relevant past experiences throughout the entire lecture. His sentences were clear but if he felt as though they were not, Lee would go back and explain what he meant. His diction also expressed passion and seriousness because he occasionally used…

First I would like to say thank you for offering us this opportunity to receive extra credit because if you did not I would have missed out on a great opportunity. I believe this was one of the best speakers that I have heard here at Western Michigan University. I enjoyed the simple fact that Mike Moore offered a question and answer which allowed audience members to ask him questions. I liked the fact that Mike Moore is a democrat and he also hates Donald Trump and George Bush. Before Michael began to speak they had interesting quotes from him playing on a PowerPoint. The quote that stood out to me the most is, “I was raised to think we are all brothers and sisters no matter what race creed or color.” That quote stood out to me because I overheard students saying, all those people who are going to see Mike Moore are crazy because he is racist.” That is so not true.…

Daniel Boorstin, an American professor, historian, writer, and attorney, is highly celebrated for his publications that classify him as an old fashioned patriot. However, Boorstin believed that Democracy and technology had consequential effects on an American’s experiences. Also, that the problems society faces are from the success of society than its failures. Boorstin uses four consequences to determine the relationship between success that technology and democracy have with each other: attenuation, or the decline of poignancy (391), decline of congregation, or new segregation (396), new determinism, or the rising sense of momentum (397), and the belief in solutions. Boorstin believed that we need to think about a process, not about a condition, and the two sides of what is needed in order to change away from problems.…

Steinem opened her speech by inviting us to imagine we were all friends, sitting in a circle, as opposed to us just being in a crowd filled with people that we did not know. She wanted it to feel like a conversation, rather than a speech. She spoke for about 25 minutes, and then opened the last half hour to question and answer. I thought it was amazing that she let us ask questions, because there are often many questions that we have while attending events like this, but never get the…

The simulated Constitution Convention that we held in class today was very eye-opening. Reading about the events that took place that day in Philadelphia, and actually participating in the tedious act certainly put things into perspective. It was interesting to take the concerns of the colonists in 1787 and fight for them as they did 230 years ago. By conducting this experiment, we got the chance to put ourselves in the delegates shoes and voice our apprehensions and get a sense of the hardships they had to face in that Pennsylvania State House the hot summer of 1787. Anyone can research the Philadelphia Constitutional Convention, but by reenacting, and actually revising our own Convention in class, we got a real appreciation of what occurred…

He appeals to all the citizens in the nation and not just those of his party. The body of the speech was very focused and it didn't jump from one subject to the next. It begins by remembering our forefathers and recognizing that times have changed since then. He goes on to saying that we will stand behind any friend and against any foe and proceeds to address other nations in the world. He seems to want to end war, have peace with everyone, and help lift up those in need. The speech did contain some effective metaphors such as, "those who foolishly sought power by riding the back of the tiger," "the torch has been passed to a new generation of Americans," and "casting off the chains of poverty." The closing of the speech is a call to action, reminding every American that what happens to their nation is in their hands. Kennedy's ideals won't be achieved in his term or his lifetime, but it is the citizen's duty to press towards achieving those ideals for future…

I was intrigued by the discussion and people sharing their life stories. It demonstrates an understanding of where they were, how they got there and where they are now. I was very surprised that people would just tell their life story and the terrible things they have done that got them to such a low point in their lives. It was fascinating to me how they would speak in front of many to reveal the low and high points in their lives. I also understand why they would go ahead and share their experiences, strength, and hopes. It is very beneficial because not only would it help that member that formed a successful recovery, it will also help encourage others as well. I am the type of person that wouldn’t open up like that so I give them a lot of praise. The meeting ended and everyone would leave with hope that would get them through the next 24 hours. After attending the meeting, I get a better understanding of what Alcoholics Anonymous. At first, I thought to myself why do we have to attend one of these meetings for class but now I can see why. Now, I see AA as a judgment free program where everyone attending is the same and can relate to each other without judgment. It is a program to get to the root of the problem and how to overcome it. It was an educational experience and I look forward to…

This activity was so much fun because it was all on my shoulders. I could have gone into the debate unprepared and nonchalant, but I chose to take it seriously and I worked to prove my point. It sounds strange, but there was a certain power I felt when I was prepared and when I was speaking of a topic I knew a great deal about. I also appreciated the one-on-one verbal combat, where my opponent and I each argued with emotion. It was…
