Hayley and I had a good experience at Dr. Mangelson’s office. The staff was extremely friendly and welcoming. While we waited for the doctor to prepare for his surgery, one of the hygienists, Karen, let us into her operatory to observe her scaling a patient’s teeth. She showed us a couple of instruments she loves and gave us some tips on working in private practice. She told us about how she and some other hygienists get together in a “study group” for continuing education. An interesting thing she told us is that Dr. Stanley Malamed was one of her professors at USC so she invited him to Utah to speak to several dentists in the area in two weeks.…

These roles include educator, researcher, entrepreneur, administrator, advocate, clinician, and public health. The role of a dental hygienist as an educator is to teach oral health professionals using educational theory and methodology. As a clinician, dental hygienists work together with health professionals to provide patient care. Dentists and dental hygienists need to be knowledgeable, compassionate, and confident in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The treatment of this infectious disease needs to be performed in a way that minimizes risks to other patients and health care professionals. Previous studies have shown an unwillingness of health care professionals in treating such individuals. This study examined the effectiveness of a training program for dental and dental hygiene students at Loma Linda University School of Dentistry (LLUSD) in treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The purpose of this program is to give students knowledge in treating HIV patients, to reduce the risk of transmission of this infectious disease to dental staff and others, and to reduce the stigma associated with treating these patients. This particular study addressed students’ comfort level in treating HIV/AIDS patients in three categories: homosexual/bisexual individuals, intravenous drug users, and individuals who have had blood…

I remember clearly as a young boy, going to my father’s work, to visit for a routine checkup and people asking me, “are you gonna clean teeth like your daddy?” I would look at them with the utmost confusion, as to why I would want to put my fingers in another person’s mouth. All my life I had been raised around the dental field with my dad asking me every morning and every night if I brushed my teeth and flossed, or standing right behind me watching the brushing strokes to make sure I wasn’t cutting the cleaning short. As a kid I did as I was told but it was never my dream to be a dentist, dental hygienist, or be involved in the dental field in any way. When I was in eighth grade, I fell in love with history and archaeology, and my dad as one…

A dental assistant has administrative duties and also helps the dentist during patient procedures. Meanwhile, a dental hygienist focuses on clinical work with patients, even performing some tasks without a dentist's immediate oversight.…

Throughout my four years of high school, I have changed my mind several times on what I wanted to pursue as my career after graduation. As a senior, I have realized that all along, the dentistry field has been one of my many interests. Unlike many children, growing up as a child I have always enjoyed going to the dentist office for my teeth cleanings. Now that I am 17 and graduating in the next five months, I have decided that the Human and Health Services field, Dental Hygiene in particular, is the career pathway that I am most interested in and would like to pursue further after graduation. In pursuing this occupation, I understand that there are many personality traits that I must present. Since Dental Hygienists are around people each day at work, a hygienist must be outgoing, ambitious, and willing to interact with several different types of people. One must also get along with his or her co-workers, be a hard worker, and be willing to adapt to change that may occur in their workplace; these would be considered as required personality traits to excel in this occupation.…
