Depression is one of the most frequently seen mental disorders. It affects approximately 9.5% of the United States population. (National Institute of Mental Health) It can cause an individual to be unable to experience pleasure in acts that they would have previously enjoyed immensely. This can cause them to fall into a slump or motivational deficit which can in turn have a huge impact on their day to day lifestyle. Depression is defined by Dictionary.com as being a condition of general emotional dejection. Symptoms of depression include:
• sadness
• apathy
• withdrawal
• lethargy
• change in sleep patterns
• change in appetite
• problems with focusing
• extreme emotions
• suicidal tendencies An individual with depression may or may not experience all of these symptoms. There are several forms of depressive disorders and each has their own characteristics:
• Minor Depression
• Major Depressive Disorder
• Dysthymic Disorder
• Bipolar Disorder
Minor Depression is a mental disorder that consists of two to five depression symptoms that last for two weeks or longer and do not meet the full criterion for Major Depression. In order for someone to be diagnosed with Minor Depressive Disorder they must exhibit a lack of interest in previously pleasurable activities or they must display a general state of sadness. The rate of Minor Depression is greater than that of Major Depression but the symptoms are often ignored. Even though it is named Minor Depression it should not be taken lightly. Even Minor Depression can dramatically affect an individual’s quality of life to the point where they may be unable to function normally. This can turn into a long term problem such as Dysthymic Disorder or Major Depression.
