Everyday people experience racism in the world. Like the quote by poet and author Maya Angelou once said, “If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude.” People need to change their way of thinking about others. People need to start understanding others feelings. Also people need to start standing up for each other. In order to combat racism, people need to get to know someone before they start judging them. Even if someone looks different than you, chances are they have more things in common with you than you know. The color of someones skin does not define them as a person. Your words can hurt people, even if you are just joking. Many people say stuff, and think that it won’t have an affect on the person. Just because someone said something about a person doesn’t make it true. Anything you say can have an affect on someone. Like in the story “The Good Samaritan”, a man was injured and instead of a preacher helping him a Samaritan helped him. The Samaritan was portrayed as bad; they were thought to be unclean. When in reality they were just like everyone else, and they just wanted to be treated like everyone else. I once saw a quote that says “People need to learn that their actions do affect other people. So be careful what you say and do, its not always just about you.” What the quote is basically saying is take other people’s feelings in to consideration, not everything in the world is going to be about you. If you see someone getting bullied for something they can’t help, you should say something. Making fun of someone for something they can’t help is wrong and you should stand up for that person. Helping someone out is the right thing to do. You wouldn’t want to be picked on and nobody stand up for you. Like in the story “Angel in Disguise”, it talks about how nobody wanted this little girl because she was sick. Surprisingly, one man decided to take her in and he ended up loving her. People would call her names, even though her illness wasn’t her fault. Even after everyone said mean things about her, that one man had hope in her. He stood up for the little girl, unlike anyone else. Without that man helping her, she would have ended up in a poorhouse. Everyone deserves to be treated equally. Like poet and author, Maya Angelou once said, “People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel” which means, if you said something mean to someone they may not remember exactly what you said, but they will remember that you hurt their feelings. People may forget what you done to them but they will never forget how you made them feel, and I think that is an important thing that everyone needs to learn.
