Firoozeh Dumas' essay, "The F-Word," addresses the very relatable struggle every person with an ethnic name faces in the American culture. Her prime example being herself, Dumas humorously and realistically depicts the trauma a person endures from constantly having to educate people about your name. She also uses the names of her siblings to provide a comparison of the names' meaning in Persian versus their American mispronunciations. Dumas' seamless use of analogies, word choice and quotations assists in her goal of making the reader understand and sympathize with her frustration.…

The institution of slavery was the murder of equality, and the birth of dehumanization. In Beloved by Toni Morrison, the use of rhetorical devices conveys this point indefinitely. On pages 175 to 176, Morrison focuses in on the most antagonistic character of the novel: Schoolteacher. In portraying his perspective, Morrison is able to achieve her purpose within the novel, and about society as a whole. The effective phrasing of diction and imagery allows Morrison to give the reader a holistic view on the state of mind behind the ultimate supporters of slavery.…

My First style is the Affiliative thinking style. The Affiliative thinking style is manifested in my work and personal life because I tend to value relationships. If I feel I am not forming interpersonal relationships at work with my coworkers then I do not feel very connected to my job. It makes me feel out of place and lost. In my personal life, I tend to feel the same way when I’m not participating in interpersonal contact. Moving to Chicago was a real challenge for me because I did not know anyone and I left all my friends in Washington DC when I moved there except for my aunt. All my family also lives in my home country, which also made my first few months here difficult. I felt very lost and unconnected to Chicago during the first few months after my arrival. Once I started to form personal relationships with people, I started to feel more centered.…

The Nature of a person's writing style can sometimes show more about an individual then the words they actually write, the poetic twists in sentence flow or the professional structure of their grammar. Writing styles are as unique as fingerprints and to define them can be as arduous as mastering the skills required to properly form one. In the quest to define my own style I discovered a detail that I have determined encapsulates the style with which I write; I write with passion. When I say I am a passionate writer I don't mean that I love to write but more that my level of personal affection toward the subject I am writing on directly affects the emotional nature I write in. In other words, I write more expressively and artistically the…
