Ordinarily, the sun’s light captured everything in sight like a mother hugging a child and giving it warmth. From the dark oak bed, I rose because of the unpleasant bites of mosquitoes. The Civil War is always on my mind. After a most successful battle yesterday when our soldiers all left home, relief and happiness came to mind, for there was a chance that we would win. Consequently, that would explain the surge of energy running through my body after waking up. Starting off with breakfast, I walked to my kitchen, the wood underneath my feet start to creak. The closer I walked to the kitchen, the warmer and cozier the atmosphere became. My servant, Julia, prepared breakfast for me today similar to many other days, I always wonder what will breakfast will be. Fresh eggs from my brown feathered hens were soft surrounded by creamy goat cheese, and well-cooked toast was on the plate this morning. Enjoying the meal is a morning ritual,…
In the wee hours of the morning my life is the embodiment of a living, breathing dichotomy. Awakening with a wry little smile on my face, I knew I had dreamed of the river, big brown trout, and sweet 3wt bamboo rods. My body screams – “Where’s the coffee”, while my brain questions the sanity of getting up this early on a Saturday. Oblivious to the cacophony, the hairs on the back of my neck tingle. Betraying logic, they forewarn that this pre-dawn moment was the premonition of a great day ahead.…
The bed is a worm, the droughts are cold, yet my feet swing outward into the chill. Sleep drags me backward until a new thought penetrates, I have a chance to achieve more than yesterday if I move now. I then got ready for a new day at school. I get to school, and immediately my best friend spots me, surprising me as she ran over and jumped on me. As always she starts…
The day was bright with a welcoming sky and cotton clouds. A cool breeze broke the heavy humidity and lifted a weight off my shoulders. The building that was once a towering mountain was behind me and my pathway lead home. A new family member was coming home and this time, she was…
I was exposed to Crossfit while I was stationed at Ramstein AB, Germany. Most people take a look at a posted workout or video, of elite Crossfit athletes and get intimidated or scared. They shouldn’t! The workouts that get posted to these sites are made for the more advanced, elite athletes. Crossfit is a new idea and like all new things, you either love it or you hate it. However, Crossfit brings something new to the table which is why many believe it is the better way of life and physical fitness. First, we will look at who started Crossfit and what it means. Then I will describe what the community is and lastly we will talk about competitions.…
What’s better to chill out a hot summer’s day than something sweet and cool? No, I am not talking about a Popsicle. I am not talking about an ice cream cone, either. I am not even talking about iced tea or lemonade. It is something better than all of those, and it doesn’t even have all the sneaky calories of those other tasty treats! The answer to the question is simple. Have you guessed it? It is a cherry.…
That first breath of humid tropical air in the morning a refreshing change from the dry mountain air of home. All the memories of the plane trip and the many wasted classroom hours spent day dreaming of the fun these eight days would be packed with, all came flooding back in that one moment. It was incredibly energizing, in those few seconds I could feel myself become almost giddy with anticipation and I was still barely even awake. I could tell it was still early in the morning, but the sun was already peeking over the sea casting wild colors in the sky, the thought of drifting back to sleep was a joke. I was awake now, and probably would be for the next eight days.…
I awoke to the sounds of birds singing, and the light shining through the window of my bedroom. I opened my eyes and stretched my pale arms towards the ceiling. As I put on my slippers, I thought to myself, “today is going to be a good day.” And went downstairs to get breakfast. I hummed to the tune of one of the many songs I had heard on the radio as I made myself a bowl of Frosted Flakes.…
The morning sun hits me through the windows and I force my eyes open only to see my beloved beside me. His pale face contains a pair of smiling eyes and saliva that’s coming out of the tip of his lips. I couldn't resist but to place a gentle kiss on him while removing the sticky water off of him. Soon I slowly pull myself up in a sitting position next to him. Trying not to wake him up, I turn my head to the panda holding the clock that is showing 7:38 in the morning. I massage my sore arms as I move quietly out of the room. The bright sun lightens the living room as I close the room door behind me. What a great start in the morning with the warm sun shining. I quickly washed my hands in the kitchen sink, which is right next to the living room. Then I…
“When you smoke herb, it reveals yourself to you,” is a famous quote of the pothead and marvelous musician Bob Marley. He felt as though marijuana helped tune in with your inner being. I believe cannabis that cannabis does this too and therefore have become a habitual marijuana consumer. Being in tune with ones inner being is important, yet not the reason that I smoke cannabis. The cannabis plant is beautiful, from the leaf to the buds you smoke. I love the ‘highs’ from smoking marijuana, and last but not least, I love how I can function while ‘high’. The summary is that little nuggets of joy have been crucial in making me who I am now, and I am grateful for everything marijuana has brought.…
Although being Saturday, the long expected beginning of the weekend that allows me to stay in bed much longer than usually, I was already awake and it was not even eight o’clock yet. Still lying in my comfortable bed wrapped up into my favorite, soft and warm, blue blanket, I could hear the pleasing sound of water flowing down the gutter. It was a rainy morning outside. Not being able to help myself from wondering why on earth I had to be the one getting up so early today, I tried to prolong my staying in bed as much as possible. After few more minutes of stretching and trying to hide myself from the morning light by putting my head under the softness warmth of my bedclothes, I decided to finally get up.…
Sleep is much appreciated by all. The roasting blankets send you to paradise. The mornings are dreadful, getting off the bed to take a shower is a difficult task but the countdown to go hit the hay begins again! Once at school, everyone has two fingers on their lips pretending that they’re smoking as the water vapour transpires. The tuck-shop has a new menu and the introduction of hot chocolate causes frenzy.…
Photography is like any other art where the sky is the limit. The most important component to photography is the camera. I have a Nikon D3000 SLR digital camera. It is like one of my children. I go everywhere with it and when I don’t have I always feel like something is missing. It helps me bring my creative side to life and gives me just the shot I am looking for. It is heavy and sometimes a pain to carry but the weight is worth it for the end results. It has endless settings that I can adjust to achieve what it is I am trying to create. When I look through the view finder I look at a whole new world.…
The alarm sounds I open my eyes excited to start a new day. I roll my covers back and inhale filling my lungs with the aroma of bacon, my mouth waters as I realize that my sweet wife has risen early to make me breakfast. I stand, but not too fast as I despise the feeling of being dizzy. I slip on my fuzzy slippers that my daughter got me for Christmas the previous year, and drowsily stumble to the bathroom. I shed my robe and rotate the handles of the shower clockwise allowing the water to pour out of the faucet. The steam starts to rise off of the floor of the shower and with a quick swipe of the hand I know that the water is perfect. The water washes away the morning drowsiness and in turn allows me the solitude and relaxation I need before starting another busy day. I dry off as I step out of the shower wrapping the moist towel around my waist again the smooth salty smell of bacon fills the air. I grab my tooth brush and apply the cinnamon flavored tooth paste to the bristles, slowly and then swiftly giving my mouth the fresh start it deserves.…
Waking up in a place that wasn’t familiar to you is quite scary and daunting. The smell of sick patients, the anti-bacterial wash spread across every object in the room, made me feel dizzy and at unease of what had happened to me. My mother sitting beside my bed, brushing my silky brown hair, her hands smelt like lavender and daisy just like soap we used at home. Nothing compared to being at home in your own environment with the people you love most, but there was no way I was…
