Descriptive Essay: Jaguar Pride
One cool, September afternoon, I stood in a hotel parking lot with 200 of my closest friends, in an unfamiliar state. Charter buses sat in the background with window paint announcing our arrival in a loud, “JAGUAR PRIDE!” The sun rose on the horizon, scattering blues and pinks across our faces. We were divided into two groups, the larger stood not twenty feet away doing breathing exercises and stretches, the smaller divided into its own groups, both of which battling the wind and the sun; the elements acting against us. We warmed up and we fought the elements, but there was always someone reminding us, “Savor this moment, this is what we’re here for.” Before we knew it, we were standing at the gates of Welcome Stadium, waiting, hearts pumping, minds reeling, some of us numb, for our chance to show Dayton what the Jaguar Pride was made of. We took the field, and everything that could have gone wrong, did. Our sound system crashed, we couldn’t hear the pit playing the opening, and we couldn’t see the drum majors giving us the count off, because we were stuffed into formation …show more content…
The color guard wasn’t the only one to experience this - I think the band learned that it was the guard’s passionate performance and lack of lost hope that pulled the ensemble into finals. They learned that connecting to the show is one of the most important aspects of what we do. We spend hours on end rehearsing, taking weeks out of our summers, and weekends out of the school year - which begs the question, if you’re not here because you’re passionate about this, because you have connected to it, then why are you wasting your and our time? It’s logic I live by; if you can’t connect with something, then there’s no point in doing it. I’ve learned through the slew of activities I’m a part of that pouring yourself into what you do is one of the most rewarding things in

It's early October on the grounds of the University of Kansas where barren trees; swaths of dormant, beige grass; and the pale, limestone buildings have created a monochromatic tableau that looks like a picture in an old, yellowed newspaper. Amongst the landscape of what could look like cathedrals lies a building that brings many students to their feet in anticipation of what will happen. Indeed, arriving for a game at Allen Fieldhouse can feel like preparing to rummage through the dusty archives of college basketball. But after a 2005 renovation, there's nothing musty about the newly developed structure. And with one of the best teams in the NCAA holding court inside, Allen Fieldhouse is all about the traditions that…

It was second quarter of the Washington Wilkes Tigers vs. Greene County Tigers football game in 2016. The empty city, with very little grocery stores and no entertainment. Not much of a place where I would want to reside, but they have been a rivalry for years. As we entered the stadium we heard the loud music as if we had come to get beat by the “fake tigers”. No tigers I have ever seen are blue and gold, so that was the go ahead to beat them and go home with a victory.…

The Kansas Jayhawks mascot was the first thing to catch my eye as I entered Allen Fieldhouse for the first time on January 20th, the day KU played against Baylor. The mascot was so big it stretched across the entire floor. Several other details seemed to catch my eye as well, like the glowing “KANSAS” letters that touched the wall next to the overpriced gift shop, the many show cases of KU basketball players and the illustrated sign that hung above the girls basketball show case that read, “Pay Heed, All Who Enter, Beware of the Phog”.…

When I first arrived at Rotunda D I thought to myself great I get to stand the whole time because there is not one open seat. Dean Nickels started the event off by introducing Scott Naggy, head boys basketball coach. Naggy then talked a little about how they recruit players for South Dakota State University. He then introduced two of his players. The first was from the West side of Chicago, he talked about how he would play basketball to escape from the hardships of growing up in West Chicago. The second player was from Michigan, he explained how basketball was the main sport played in that area. He explained how the teachers there didn't care how the students do in there class they will just pass them to get rid of them. He…

The stadium is well known for its hosting duties of the SEC baseball tournament, showcasing the top twelve teams in the Southeastern Conference. However, most Friday nights, the stadium is occupied by Hoover football fans and players. Once the band arrives, we line up and march into the stadium to our cadence. Marching begins right outside of the buses, continues into the stadium, and ends once we have reached the section of the stadium, which has been designated for the band, prior to the fans arrival. The band plays a few stand chants while the Buccanettes dance along. Once the clock strikes 10 minutes until the game, the band marches behind the visiting stands to line up for pregame. Pregame includes the entire band marching onto the field to a cadence, turning towards the audience, standing at attention, then playing the national anthem and alma matter. After these two songs are played the band will march into a new formation on the field that will allow the players to run through while the band plays the fight song. Buccanettes stand in front of the band doing our stand dance to this tune, the cheerleaders held a huge sign for the players to run through and the colorguard would run across the field with large Buccaneer flags. The audience’s reaction made the all the previous hours of getting ready worthwhile. The student section was filled with shakers, lettermen, and hundreds of students. The rest of the stadium was filled with fans from the community. After pregame, the band would march back to the stands to begin more stand chants. The band played tunes such as ESPN, sunshine, the fight song, word up, and many others. At the beginning of the second quarter we would again march out of the stadium where stretching would take place to warm up for the halftime show. The first thing…

As I walked into the museum a picture of Tiger Stadium, also known as Death Valley, instantly caught my attention. This nationally recognized attribute tends to provoke feelings of excitement and pride in LSU fans. Looking around, I found myself repeatedly reading “Home of the Champions” signs. As I viewed the autographed relics, retired jerseys, and championship trophies, I soon realized the reality of that statement. LSU’s dominating athletic program is truly one of a kind.…

The atmosphere was not as hyped as it usually is, especially in the student section. I inquired to know how the students feel and react to Mike when he attends the football games. Rodick states that we are more revved up and from a student’s perspective, it’s more sentimental and exciting, especially for her as someone who comes from out of…

In the months after his high school graduation, Mark was sent off to Central College in Pella, Iowa. There, he participated in football and got a job outside of his studies. To support himself, Mark worked as a manager at Pizza Hut for all four years he attended school. When I asked about his life as an undergrad, he told me going off to college provided some of the best years of his life. However, having to show up to every practice and event for football while trying to hold down a job and pay tuition proved to be more challenging he expected. Two years after he arrived, Mark decided to retire from the Central College team and transfer to the University of Iowa, home of the black and gold. The building for our band stands beside the football field, the spectacle of the campus. The expansive field eclipses the tiny block home of music, yet the band room shines just as brightly for those who understand its value. The brick exterior wears a coat of dingy white paint with the words “CCHS Marching Band” painted in school colors. Behind the flat building lies a field with small lines and, often, soccer…

As I walked through the school’s doors the summer before tenth grade into the blazing sun, I wondered if the choice I had made would be worthwhile. I wondered if I was going to fit in and be accepted. I instantly realized those few moments of worrying where a pointless waste of time as the Marching Band welcomed me as the newest member of the color guard. Over time, I was taught drop spins, a multitude of tosses, jazz running, as well as spinning rifles, but little did I know I was learning so much more than the physical. The mental and moral example of hard work, coordination, and acceptance of others was impressed upon me. Marching band has equipped me with lessons and values that will stay with me for a lifetime.…
