Descriptive Writing Hockey
1/21/14 Bumps and Bruises I'm tired and restless after a mentally draining day at school. There are blurred lights and angry drivers all around me as the tires of my car grind against the cold concrete. My dad pulls into the back parking lot and signals for me to get out of the car. I groan, knowing that I am in for a long practice, and slowly drag myself out of the front seat. I lug my hockey bags out of the trunk, and they become another nagging reminder of the grueling workout I'm about to face. My dad speeds away and I'm left alone, staring at the large, brightly lit building looming over me. The rink is in a low-income area, and beyond the cold, hard metal fence lies a dangerous neighborhood. The night air is warm and still, …show more content…
He's one of the biggest on the team, and also the rudest and most intolerable. Him and I have always had problems, and he is quick to get on my nerves. As I let my bag drop to the floor, the corner lands on his foot and he jumps up angrily. He shoves me against the wall, wanting to instigate a fight. He looks at me with wild eyes, and waits for me to make my move. I stay quiet and still, as the rest of my team begins to gather around us. Ryan gets impatient with my lack of enthusiasm to engage in a fight, so he takes the initiative and gives me a solid punch straight to my stomach. I buckle over, coughing and trying to catch my breath. My teammates stand there helpless, and anxious about what will happen next. I pick myself up and stand to face Ryan, the anger and hatred that I have for him boils over and I lose control of myself. I tackle him to the ground, and together we get lost in a tangle of fists. He yanks my hair back, and I respond by scratching him across the face. We roll around on the cold floor, kicking, scratching, clawing, doing whatever we can to prevail. The rest of our team finally takes action, and proceeds to pry us

“And the Chicago Blackhawks have defeated the New York Rangers to win the Stanley Cup for the third time in five years!” the announcer's voice boomed throughout the living room. A smile tugged at the corners of my mouth. I had never been a big Blackhawks fan, but I just extremely disliked the Rangers. On the other side of the room, my Uncle Nate was going nuts. He threw his New York cap down onto the floor and stomped in circles all around it. The Rangers jersey that had cost him more than a year of savings, considering he was unemployed, hung limply from his shoulders. Pillows and couch cushions flew back and forth across the wide room. Uncle Nate’s voice, which at that point was a mix between a wail and a shout, started giving me a headache.…

ESPN states that Todd Fedoruk was taken off the ice on a stretcher after a fight with Colton Orr during a game between the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers. The fight, which took place just 21 seconds into the game, ended when Orr “landed a hard, overhand right.” on Fedoruk who immediately fell backward, unconscious. Philadelphia’s team doctors immediately ran onto the ice to help Fedoruk who earlier this season missed eighteen games after “major facial surgery” from another fight (Philadelphia). Injuries like this have made many people take a deeper look into fighting. Players are getting bigger and stronger, which has resulted in an increase in the number of injuries during the 2007 NHL season. Fighting is also giving hockey a bad image to some, which is turning away potential sponsors and fans. However, fighting in hockey has tolerated since day one. It is also an aspect to the game that draws many people to the game and can also be used as a strategical move to shift momentum and to help star players do their jobs. The players also have unwritten rules they follow to keep fighting from getting out of hand and many believe that fighting prevents dirty plays and cheap shots by keeping players in check. Fighting has always been a part of hockey and should never be taken out.…

Shoulder fake left, head fake right, a sweet inside outside move, and he fires it in top shelf, beating the goalie glove side to win the game. While that may sound like a narrative of a game-winning hockey goal, in reality, it is 1:30 AM on your average Thursday night and I am struggling to find the perfect concluding sentence to finish my history term paper. Often when I am struggling to find an answer to a question or need to concentrate on any given topic, I reach for my worn-out Warrior hockey stick and my dusty orange ball and begin to stickhandle mindlessly. One might never know, that my mind is far away from hockey as I look like a complete fool deking (hockey term for getting past people) imaginary people on my way to an imaginary net.…

When was the last time you went to a Hockey game? Last Year? Last Week? Yesterday? Hockey is a game that brings people together. It creates a family of people that will stand with each other through anything; fans and players, parents and coaches. The Bond that is built is incredibly strong. One athlete, Denna Laing, was recently injured in the first ever Women’s Winter Classic after she accidentally stepped on a stick, crashing head first into the boards. She was removed from the ice on a stretcher and rushed to Mass General Hospital. Her fans, friends, teammates, and coaches are supporting her coming together as a community, but wouldn't it be so much better if we never had to go through difficult times like what Denna is going through right…

Playing Ice Hockey was a burning passion of mine. It all started in the cold and dense locker room. Practice had just finished up and we were inside the locker room getting undressed. I was a forward on the team and was only ten years old. The team goalie was sick and was not going to be able to make our game the next day. Coach asked “Is anyone willing to play goalie for our game?” and I, the young ten year old boy I was; was the first person to quickly respond saying “I will!” Playing goalie was destined for me, I was a star and very talented.…

It has to take incredible courage to process a challenge like losing a limb in war. Stories abound from young men and women who stepped on a mine, or were ambushed, and their vehicle blown-up. For some, the moment is frozen in time and they cannot shed it. For others, they don't remember anything before waking up in the hospital without all their parts. To take in that realization, and then go on to perform as a star athlete is to this author, unimaginable. The incredible strength and perseverance to go on with life and then for some, to further demonstrate their zeal for life in their high level of participation in sports, is mind blowing.…

College has so far exceeded my expectations in a huge way. As a new member of the ice hockey team there were many uncertainties and worries, as well as tons of excitements and anticipations. Obviously the biggest part, school, was nerve wracking and exciting too. In college hockey its very common that players take a few years off of school prior to attending, to play hockey in junior hockey leagues. This created a bit more nerves then excitement for the classroom aspect of school since i've only taken 3 college courses since graduating high school, making it a bit harder to get back into the swing of things. Besides getting back into school routine, being a hockey player in college has made the beginning…

Many people have been talking about taking hitting and fighting out of hockey in the last few years because of the rise in career ending injuries, but the cause is from the fact that hockey players having been getting faster stronger and more skilled. Although people do get severe injuries and some take it too far it’s the risk that they face every time they step on the ice. Hitting starts at the age of 11 which I think is an appropriate age to start hitting. Taking Hitting and fighting out of hockey would change the game forever.…

My entire life has revolved around sports. Growing up, I spent most of my childhood weekends at hockey rinks all across New England watching my two older brothers play. It was only a matter of time before I laced up my very own pair of skates. I immediately fell in love with every aspect of hockey. My teammates and coaches were like my family and my hometown rink was my second home. This is where my passion for sports began.…

He took me out of the game for a "little while" so we could "save my energy for when we really need it." I saw right through his poor attempt at enthusiasm and encouragement. The whole team was furious at me for losing the ball. I was angry at myself because I was playing poorly and had earned the name of the team loser. After the time-out, several boys on the other team that had been laughing at me marched haughtily onto the court. From my perspective, they are so full of themselves. John mouthed to me, "This is how it's done." Brandon flashed a bitter smile. I tried not to just hand victory over to them, but it was very difficult not to be furious. Eventually, I found myself scowling at the…
