1. Introduction
Desiccant air conditioning technology is an emerging alternative air conditioning technology having many advantages over conventional VAC system. Desiccant cooling technology is free from CFCs, can be operated with low grade energy (heat energy) and capable of precise control of latent heat load of conditioned space. This eco friendly and energy saving method of air conditioning has drawn interest of many researchers over last few decades. The performance of desiccant system depends on system configuration, properties of desiccant material and operation parameters [1, 2]. The objective of this work is to study different desiccant-VAC based hybrid air conditioning system …show more content…
It is described in Fig-4. Ambient air is sensibly cooled in two heat exchangers consecutively (2-3, 3-4) after dehumidification (1-2). Air is mixed with return air (4-5) and sensibly cooled in cooling coil by exchanging heat with cold water from cooling tower (5-6). It is then divided into two parts. One part is supplied to the conditioned space as supply air while the other part is further cooled in cooling tower (6-8) and supplied to the heat exchanger and finally exhausted (8-9). Desiccant wheel is regenerated by ambient air. In this cycle, there is provision of fresh air inlet to the conditioned space.
Because of the complexity of the SENS cycle, another cycle was proposed by Maclaine-cross [7], known as REVERS cycle. Only difference between SENS and REVERS cycle is, the later one uses single heat exchanger and exhaust air is used for desiccant wheel regeneration.
Meckler [8] introduced desiccant air conditioning with two stage dehumidification. It is illustrated in Fig-5. Ambient air is used as supply air, which is dehumidified twice with intermediate cooling by return air. Return air is used for desiccant wheel dehumidification and finally exhausted to
