SYMPTOMS OF GROUPTHINK
An illusion of invulnerability, with excessive optimism and risk taking as the group begins to behave as though it cannot make a bad decision
Pressures on individual members to conform and reach consensus mean that unpopular ideas may be suppressed.
An unquestioned belief in the inherent morality of the group which leads members to be convinced of the logical correctness of what they are doing and ignore the ethical or moral consequences of decisions. They appear to think, ‘we could never make a bad decision because we are such good and clever people’.
There’re Alternative approaches to Decision Making
Cross-Cultural Approach: People from different cultural backgrounds have very different decision making styles.
Jack and Carter (2007): Decision making is the outcome of power, identity (self), knowledge, boundary-building, ideology, (supposed) rationality, symbol, and morality.
Groupthink is a condition that occurs when group member’s primary drive is to achieve group satisfaction, resulting in overconfidence and a lack if critical thinking. The group’s desire to strive for consensus overrides their motivation to explore alternative options.
This mode of thinking may cause some group member to withhold their opinions, fearing they will be opposed or rejected. This intimidation reflects pressures, either imagined or real,
