Desiree's Baby is a short story written by Kate Chopin. She was abandoned when she was younger and adopted by this rich white family, called the Valmondes. She marries a guy called Armand. Then she has a baby. 3 months later after the baby born, her husband gets mad. He notices that the baby is black because of Desiree is black. Next, that baby was rejected by Armand. Finally, Armand feels regretful because he finds a letter that his mom writes to his dad and it says that his real mom is also a black woman.
Among many characters in the story, I dislike Armand because of some reasons. For the first thing, he discriminates black-skinned people. For example, he always looks down the slaves in the house. Moreover, he also dislikes his son after 3 months that his son was born because he has black skin. Last but not least, he is an irresponsible person. As we can see in the story, he is not responsible for his son. He is a father, but he does not care much about his child. He just blames his wife for an unclear background. Moreover, he also insists his wife to leave home. These show how irresponsibility Armand has.
In my opinion, I think that this short story educates us not to discriminate the others because sometimes it can reflect back to us. In illustration, Armand he looks down the dark-skinned people. However, his son is a black one. He tries to deny the reality by accusing his wife. He thinks that his wife is the one who contains the black-skinned genes that make their child dark. After Desiree leaves home, he finds his mother’s letter, which displays that he actually has black part but not his wife’s. It shows that he discriminates himself. Therefore, we all should try to respect the others and not to look down on someone because our discrimination to someone will make him or her to become our enemy and also bring them a lot of embarrassment, so we should make more friends instead of making enemies.
This is a great story that
