Question One The important concerns of this case are highlighted by Detective Casey’s department failing him when he did nothing wrong. The fact that after the shooting Detective Casey received minimal contact arguably when he needed it most in sense of validation is unacceptable. To have his worker’s compensation claim denied is also extremely concerning. Corruption is a word that is fair for this situation. The fact that the compensation attorney intentionally had given Detective Casey the wrong information regarding the timeline he had to make a decision of whether he would return to the force or not is extremely concerning.
Question Two A management communication practice …show more content…
that should be altered in the wake of this case has to be contact with the officer who delivered the fatal shot. The department should send officers everyday for a minimum of two weeks; both face to face a well as phone call in order to properly monitor the officer’s behavior after the shooting. This will allow fellow officers to evaluate, in this case, Detective Casey both physically as well as psychology; in order to evaluate aftermath symptoms one may have.
Question Three As for management of critical incidents, the suggestions I would give is to be more vocal and have more compassion for the officers going through what Detective Casey went through. The job officers do on a daily basis provide much stress, however taking a life on the job can provide a lifetime of guilt and anguish. So when compensation checks are not arriving and insurance is not covering multiple doctors visits, to me that all starts with the lack of management in the critical incidents division.
Question Four In class it was discussed about the difference between commutation(s) and communication.
Communication(s) refers to an organization; as where communication refers to the individual. In this case there was no communication with Detective Casey the individual; instead the departments focus was more on the act of communications with organizations such as the public and the media and informing them about the case. If I was in the position of Detective Casey’s commanding officer, I would recognize that one of my detectives has been through a traumatic event. Therefore, I as the commanding officer would personally make sure Detective Casey was being treated fairly by all who were handling his case and I would be in constant contact with him as
well.
Question Five Many men and women I know are in the criminal justice and or law enforcement field. Many if not all take great pride in their job and the department they represent. If I was to give advice to someone contemplating whether or not to join I would tell them that the job, although rewarding, requires very thick skin and the ability to communicate at an extremely high level. With that being said, it is hard to give advice for a profession that is highly unpredictable.
Conclusion
The situation of Detective Casey sounds all too familiar to many men and women around the country, including myself. A long time neighbor of mine has been put in a similar predicament. A 25 year plus Atlantic City officer who shot and killed a man on July 7th, 2015 has still been denied compensation checks from his department and has since retired. To the outside world it seems like no profession take more pride in camaraderie than law enforcement, however reading about this case will make one think otherwise.
