Development of Nanotechnology
INTRODUCTION

Nanotechnology has potential applications in many sectors of the American economy, including consumer products, health care, transportation, energy and agriculture. In addition, nanotechnology presents new opportunities to improve how we measure, monitor, manage, and minimize contaminants in the environment. While the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, or “the Agency”) is interested in researching and developing the possible benefits of nanotechnology, EPA also has the obligation and mandate to protect human health and safeguard the environment by better understanding and addressing potential risks from exposure to nanoscale materials and products containing nanoscale materials (both referred to here as “nanomaterials”). Nanotechnology presents potential opportunities to create better materials and products. Already, nanomaterial-containing products are available in U.S. markets including coatings, computers, clothing, cosmetics, sports equipment and medical devices. A survey by EmTech Research of companies working in the field of nanotechnology has identified approximately 80 consumer products, and over 600 raw materials, intermediate components and industrial equipment items that are used by manufacturers (Small Times Media, 2005). A second survey by the Project on Emerging Nanotechnologies at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars lists over 300 consumer products (http://www.nanotechproject.org/index.php?id=44 or http://www.nanotechproject.org/consumerproducts). Our economy will be increasingly affected by nanotechnology as more products containing nanomaterials move from research and development into production and commerce. Nanotechnology also has the potential to improve the environment, both through direct applications of nanomaterials to detect, prevent, and remove pollutants, as well as indirectly by using nanotechnology to design cleaner industrial processes and create environmentally responsible products.

    Technology has improved the human species by providing information around the world, leading to developments in different countries. Biotechnology is improving the world of medicine, agriculture, and energy production. In the medical world, technology has a big impact by helping scientists and doctors figure out how to fight off diseases and viruses. For example, there are two individuals, one who has malaria and the other has built up a resistance to malaria. Knowing that an individual has built up resistance to malaria can help, simply by taking a sample of their blood and uploading it to a computer. Scientists will trying to figure out what is the cause for this resistance to malaria, they will have to break down the DNA of the individual who is immune and simply extract the gene repelling malaria. With this knowledge there will be fewer deaths to groups of individuals who have not genetically build up a resistance to malaria in high risk countries. The downfall to biotechnology in the medical world is finding test subjects that will comply with the testing’s. Once the scientists and doctors find a concrete solution, they will be approved by the FDA to release their material to the general public. In the agricultural world, technology has helped us improve plants to become more stable and be able to sustain life in certain temperatures. With the creation of the microscope, we can see what genes we can take out the plant and add to the plant cell, so it can become a super plant. As we grow, global warming is causing the Earth to become hotter each year. Therefore we are then creating plants that can sustain life with less water than the original.     One solution to solving the world’s energy policy could be to invest more government spending into nanotechnology. Nanotechnology is manipulating an atom down to its molecular scale in order to change its complexion. An example of nanotechnology is Thermocells, which have been introduced by using carbon nanotube technology, and can provide up to three times the amount of energy than a normal cell. Thermocells look and feel like a standard cell phone battery but instead of the battery continuously running out of energy and needing recharging it constantly generates electricity so there is no need for recharging. Another example of nanotechnology is in the field of solar energy. The very best solar cells existing today only absorb about forty percent of the suns rays while commercially available cells only absorb about twenty percent of the suns rays. With increased research scientists can find out more on bandgaps or energy gaps, which in a solid state have a lack of electrons. If we can utilize bandgaps then we can change the structure of the solar panels causing them to absorb more sunlight. In 2005 the University of Toronto introduced a spray on solar collector that using nanoparticles can change the complexity of the spray to cause whatever it is applied upon to transform it into a solar collector (Water Scarcity).     Over the past three decades we have witnessed a tremendous amount of activity in the area of biosensors. Biosensors are small devices employing biochemical molecular recognition properties as the basis for a selective analysis. The major processes involved in any biosensor system are analyte recognition, signal transduction, and readout. Due to their specificity, speed, portability, and low cost, biosensors offer exciting opportunities for numerous decentralized clinical applications. Electrochemical devices have traditionally received the major share of the attention in biosensor development. Such devices produce a simple, inexpensive and yet accurate and sensitive platform. The name electrochemical biosensor is applied to a molecular sensing device which intimately couples a biological recognition element to an electrode transducer. The purpose of the transducer is to convert the biological recognition event into a useful electrical signal. Amperometric and potentiometric transducers are most commonly used in conjunction with electrochemical biosensors. In potentiometric devices, the analytical information is obtained by converting the biorecognition process into a potential signal in connection to the use of ion selective electrodes (ISE). Amperometric biosensors operate by applying a constant potential and monitoring the current associated with the reduction or oxidation of an electroactive species involved in the recognition process. An amperometric biosensor may be more attractive because of its high sensitivity and wide linear range. Elegant research on new sensing concepts, coupled with numerous technological innovations, has opened the door to widespread clinical applications of amperometric devices. The high sensitivity, specificity, simplicity, and inherent miniaturization of modern electrical bioassays permit them to rival the most advanced optical protocols.
