Deviance is defined as, “The recognized violation of cultural norms.” Deviance is an act of rebellion against a set of rules, and each society establishes different norms. Individuals are expected to follow a specific rule, and if broken they may be labeled as deviant. In many situations, breaking these laws and rules should not be acceptable but sometimes it is necessary. However, being defined as deviant isn’t always because you broke the law but because of the society we live in. As our generation gets older we began to discriminate against the way people look, assuming they are up to no good. For instance if we see a teen boy wearing baggy attire we know that baggy attire is related to gangs, so we assume that kid is affiliated with bad things. Just by his appearance alone, people infer that he is dangerous to society, and therefore makes him a deviant individual. Sometimes being labeled as deviant isn’t always about breaking specific laws. For example if you refuse to turn in your homework, or you don’t listen to your teachers, or you lie to a friend/parent/anyone. These acts of defiance aren’t illegal but they are in a way disrespectful, which will be frowned upon and seen as an act of deviance.
Although being deviant is not a good thing, sometimes there is a time that is acceptable. It depends on the situation, but if you are doing something “bad” to help someone then it should not be considered deviant but still is. If I were in class and a teacher was bullying a student, the right thing to do would be to stick up for the student and not care about the consequences. Another example would be lying, which is usually wrong but sometimes needed to save another persons feelings. The other day a boy who I did NOT like told me he wanted to go to the movies with me, and that no one
