A common consequence of this type of style of parenting is that the child ends up with poor social skills and feelings of unworthiness of the love of others, and I can relate to this. My social skills have improved over the years, as I have been living and supporting myself on my own since I was nineteen, but I do suffer from lack of self-worth and confidence. Growing up, my mother did mostly everything for me. When we had a falling out when I was 19 and she made me move out, it was very difficult to become self-reliant because of the lack of rules throughout my life in the household, and the fact that my mother never really forced me to do anything. If I didn’t want to attend school or a function, she welcomed it. So when the rug was pulled from under me, and I was forced to begin to support myself, I could not handle it for a very long time. My mother did use many beneficial parenting techniques, such as SELF-ORIENTED INDUCTION, a strategy where she would ask me to think about the consequences that I might endure because of my behavior on any given situation. She also was very big on OTHER-ORIENTED INDUCTION, where she asked me to contemplate the effects of my behavior on others. To this day I have issues with carrying out tasks autonomously, and keeping a long-term job. I’m not sure if this will change with time, but I have a lot of
