My Parenting Style Analysis
Everyone is raised differently. Many children are shown warmth and love while others are not. Parenting styles definitely affect a child’s mental and physical development (Huffman, 2012, p. 349). In my experience, my parents used a type of parenting style know as authoritative, and I developed into an independent and strong willed woman (Huffman, 2012, p. 349). Generally, an authoritative parent sets and enforces rules strictly, as well as provides emotional support (Huffman, 2012, p. 349). In my childhood, I broke many rules and there were many consequences. For example, I remember when I broke my mother’s glass China cabinet. I was playing with my cousin, in my house, and we did not have a ball, so we used an hourglass. My mother told me if I wanted to play, I needed to take it outside, but I did not listen, so I threw it to my cousin. My cousin did not catch it and it went flying into the China cabinet. The glass shattered everywhere. My mother screamed “GO TO YOUR ROOM NOW!!!” and I ran crying to my room. About ten minutes later my mother came in, she said firmly, “I told you not to throw the hourglass and you did, you did not listen,” …show more content…
This would not be bad, if my father’s favorite framed picture was not on the wall. Additionally, my cousin and I kept throwing the balls on the wall, trying not to hit the picture. Well this time, I did not hit the picture, but my cousin did, and I was the one who got yelled at. My mother told me not to do it, but I did not listen, therefore, I was yelled at for being irresponsible. The framed picture fell off the wall and a corner was chipped. Afraid, my mother did not tell my father. Until this day, he still does not know how the corner was chipped. My mother gave me another spanking and told me she loved me and I needed to listen better.
