What kind of perception do you believe men had of women during that time? How does her poem convey the message of inequality between men and women?

During Victoria era, women were considered to be inferior to men and were generally being seen as housewives responsible for cleaning the house, cooking food, and taking care of children; they have very limited rights and freedoms. Once they get married, their ownership to their wealth, and all their rights were transported to their husband. We can find the three symbols of canvas, the woman in the panting and the male artist in the poem "In an Artist's Studio".The reoccurring symbol of canvas contains a hidden meaning of entrapment and oppression. The first line of the poem, "one face looks out from all his canvases"(line 1) suggests that the canvas is acting like a jail that traps and restricts the female model. She is not able to express her true feeling and emotion and has to be what the male artists shapes her. The woman in the painting is a symbol which represents the women during Victoria era who are being confined by the ideal image of society and were suffering from oppression. The woman in the painting was being portrayed as imaginary perfect figures of "queen"(line 5), "angel"(line 7), and "saint"(line 7), but the images are not what she really is. The last symbol that is being employed in the poem is the male artist; he symbolizes the society's idealistic idea of women. He has been shaping the female model into a "saint"(line 5), an "angel"(line 7), a "queen"(line 7), which are all examples of the society's perfect ideal feminist images of women, this suggests us that in a sense, the artist is representing the society's appreciation of beauty. The three

This painting is one in a series to honor women and comment on their "place" in pre-revolutionary China. As courtesans and prostitutes they are elevated in the artist's hands, isolated in a field of paint, accompanied by emblems and images from classic Chinese paintings. Characters for Nu Wa, a Chinese creation goddess are painted over her groin. Nu-Wa was the inventor of marriage and made humans by slinging a rope. The hand made meant that it was noble, and made with rope stood for poor. The multiple circles around the painting means Pi in the Chinese language, which translated means universe and it’s surrounding the women in the painting. The thing that stands out the most is the red square in the middle of the painting. This means female in Chinese and makes sense since its on the women’s groin I think this painting means uniformity and creation of people. The giant butterfly in the painting can stand for multiple things such as change, joy, and love. Also can show a feminist side to the women in the painting make her look innocent.…

The reason I found this painting so intriguing, is since the content is so mysterious, I found it fun to be able to put my own interpretation on it. However it is said, that the little boy who looks as though he is getting ready to throw a handful of rose petals at the couple, is known as, Jest or, Folly and represents pleasure or joy. The figure behind him is much more complex and surprising. At first glance all I saw was the face of what seemed to be an innocent little girl, but if you look closely you’ll see her body is scaly like a reptile or a long snake tail. They say that since this figure seems to deceive us that she represents deception and has been identified by some scholors…

As far back as the eighteenth century during the Enlightenment period, women were seeing gender differences made within society and some, as did the British writer Mary Wollstonecraft who wrote “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” 1792. She argued that women be have fuller participation in the political process and be better wives and mothers if they were educated (Benton & DiYanni, p 420). Although this was only the beginning of the fight for women’s rights, literature was, like most others forms of art, an active participant in the moves as we’ve seen throughout history. As we know, women continuously were deemed as second class citizens who were not able to own property, work, or do anything short of having and taking care of the children in the household other than being readily available for sex as the man deemed necessary.…

The narrator is clearly feeling trapped in a marriage that does not allow her freedom. Meanwhile, as a man, her husband is free to come and go. This inability for her to express herself in a meaningful way eventually leads her to associate herself with the woman in the wallpaper who looks to be, like the narrator, behind bars or in a cage. So, given the fact that the narrator feels trapped by both her husband and surroundings, it is not farfetched to assume that the woman she sees behind the wallpaper is a symbol of herself and the Victorian women like her.…
