Diesel Mechanics is surrounded by similar jobs such as large vehicle repair and maintenance.
Mainly commercial trucks, buses, and construction vehicles are maintained. Marine and railroad mechanics monitor everything and fix problems when needed. Fixed diesel mechanics work on engines that provide power during emergencies. Truck mechanics maintain and tune trucks and work on trucks that are broken down along roads. Small engines is an important one because mechanics work on cars, generators, and small engines in repair shop(“Diesel Mechanic Guide”).
The pay fluctuates depending on years in service. The median pay in this area is $42,320 per year. It mainly depends on how long you have been somewhere and
how
York 4 good of a worker you are in this area. The average hourly pay is $20.35 per hour(“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). Many skills are necessary for this job. Customer service skill is the main skill needed in this job. People have to be able to talk to customers frequently to get their name out there. Another one is mechanic skills which knowledge about all the tools needed in this general area. Trouble shooting skills is identifying mechanical and electronic problems. Workers have to have steady hand and eye coordination to notice all the little details(“Bureau of Labor Statistics”).
Many different kinds of welding skills are needed in this field such as Oxy Acetylene Fusion welding , which is when a mechanic heat the metal hot and fuses it together. Oxy acetylene braze welding is a very confusing way of welding.Arc welding is welding that contains electric arc. Oxy acetylene cutting is cutting with a torch. These skills come in handy when working on parts for the diesel engines (“Diesel Mechanics Foundation”).
Diesel engines has many parts that make them work properly. Some of them are the starting system which builds up compression to make the motor crank over and start. An air intake supplies air to the combustion chamber which helps the motor breath. The exhaust helps the motor run and burn cleaner with all the new emissions they have now. Crankshaft bearings holds the crankshaft which moves the connecting rods and pistons. Engine break slows the engine down when going downhill which keeps the breaks from wearing out. Head bolts, studs and other bolts that hold the motor together are called fasteners. The retarter is the whole braking system. The frame holds the motor and components to the vehicle. Seals keep the motor from leaking oil.

Bearings keep everything balanced in the motor. To maintain the motor diesel vehicle needs oil, coolant, glow plugs, and compression(“Diesel Mechanics Foundation”).
There are even more parts such as piston. The piston assembly consist of piston compressed pin, connecting rod, and connecting rod bearing. Timing gear train is the timing chain, crankshaft gear, and the camshaft gear with out these the motor wouldn't run at all. The cylinder head provide exhaust valve and intake valve. They are in one cast iron piece that bolts to the block. The engine has a lubrication system that contains oil galleries in the block and water jackets. Engine cooling systems cool the motor and makes it run more efficient. Fuel system feeds fuel into injection system. Injector nozzles spray fuel patterns in the combustion chamber. Electronics play a big role because they have fuses, computers, components, and sensors that tell the motor what to do (“Modern Diesel Technology”).
Diesel engines can run from several different types of diesel. Bio diesel is bio fuel and is made of reusable objects. It burns a lot cleaner than regular diesel. Red dye diesel is non taxed because it is an implement fuel. It is a lot cheaper for farmers because of no tax. Regular diesel has crude oil in it. More carbon atoms then gas. Large hydrocarbon molecules. Low sulfur diesel meets EPA requirements. Has lower sulfur count (“In the company of greatness”).
Work environment in this field is different than many other jobs. Mainly work Is in a shop. Shops are usually well ventilated so, no exhaust fumes are in the building. The repair shops are pretty well always noisy with tools and air tools. Some companies repair vehicles alongside highways and backroads. The workers work full time and almost always overtime(“Bureau of Labor Statistics”). York 6
There are 10 major diesel engines that started it all. The cummins B-Series has 325hp, 5.9L engine and was the first to bring respect to diesel trucks. International DT446 has a 7.6L engine and has good power to move freight. Wartsila-sulzer RtA96-C has 108,920 hp. It is a 14 cylinder engine and weighs 2,300 tons. Caterpillar C12 is a super truck race engine. It was twin turbos, 1,400 hp, and hits 100 mph in 7.9 seconds. The GM 6.6L Duramax is made by Isuzu and has 360 hp. International 7.3L powerstroke is a V8 with 525 lb ft torque.Mtv 160-400 is a V16 motor with 3,650 hp, and they put them in boats. The VW 5.0L is a small compact motor that hits 0-60 mph in 8 seconds.Detroit Diesel Series 60 is the first heavy duty diesels with 515hp. Rudolph Diesel’s first working engine was a 60L engine with 20hp and ran on bio diesel (“In the company of greatness”). Being in this job field would be a good opportunity for many people .There are many jobs that could come from being in this field.
