Introduction: In this lab i used glucose and starch to show if the cell membrane is permeable, impermeable, or selectively permeable to these substances. Dialysis tubing is a plastic like substance that has small pores in it. These pores allow certain chemicals to flow into and out of the cells. The size of the molecule determines what goes through the tubing. On of the materials that we will be using is glucose. glucose is a simple sugar that easily dissolves in water. To test for the presence of glucose we will use glucose test strips. The strip will change from an aqua blue color to a brown color if there is glucose in the solution. Starch is a complex molecule that forms from a suspension in the water. To test for the presence of starch I will use Lugol's iodin. When it comes in contact with the water and turns black or blue thats how you know that starch is present.…
Secondly, the article positively affects the reliability because the author has a clear explanation, she indicated distinctly what and why multivitamins might do more harm than good. Currently there is no evidence to support my claim that a supplement could be safe and lower risk. I believe that the evidence is not there because we have not done the research yet. With cardiovascular disease being the highest killer in the world, more efforts should be taken in order to find all causes and cures possible. An experiment of this kind would take many years and it could possibly be under way now. Scientist would have to pull data from hundreds of subjects over 50 plus years. It would be a…

The Article, Supplements are a Shame by Mike Tanier, argues one big factor that is influenced by many athletes, gym rats, and regular Americans who take supplements on a daily basis. The main argument that this article stresses is how most of the supplements that people take is just a big waste of money. Mike Tanier also argues that there is a lot more we don’t know about supplements than what we actually do know. For instance, even though we do not know how big the supplement industry is, we have a good estimate but do not know how many athletes use them, we do not know who is in charge, we do not know what these products actually do to our body, we don’t know what is contained in the bottles.…

As I learned a great deal I wanted to apply the knowledge that I did learn into my life style. Through the reading I decided that I wanted to set a goal to not need to take dietary supplements. I rather wanted to eat my vitamins and minerals through the food I decided to eat. By eating more green and leafy vegetables I can gain my iron. By drinking carrot juice in the morning I will be gaining all of the vitamin A I need. I have started to look deeply into what I am eating and how it will help me achieve a long lasting life. By doing this I will know if there is something I need to take, such as a supplement, or if I simply need to add more of an item to my daily diet. As I am not against supplements, I do not feel that they are necessary if a balanced diet is eaten. There are so many different issues with taking too many dietary supplements that I have taken the, “more is better” mentality on the pills and let it go with the bottle…
