Dieting has to be one of the most controversial topics, many people diet. There are so many different types of diets out there who knows what to pick when deciding. There are many factors that go into it like how much weight you want to lose, how many days is the diet, what types of food do you need to eat, is the diet healthy for you and effective? Diets these days are so crazy who knows what to pick when deciding, dieters need to be more educated about the certain diet they plan to go on and the different types of disorders that can arise from not dieting right. First of all diets are a lifestyle change not just something you pick to do overnight and that’s how a lot of people get hurt and confused with the whole diet plan. What people need to realize is there’s a lot of ways to lose weight and you need to be sure of the right way for yourself. One way to lose weight is through diet and exercise. You have to change your whole eating plan and be fully committed to the diet plus you have to start exercising and keeping track of your weight the whole time. Also you can’t just do a diet to lose weight and then drop it or you’ll just regain all that weight back and have to start all over again. One type of dieting is called “yo-yo dieting” which is where you diet and then get off the diet and eat what you want and then go back to the diet (Obesity. (2004). In New Harvard Guide to Women's Health, The). This is very unhealthy because your body is basically binging and then purging itself almost like an eating disorder. Your giving your body healthy food and dieting then you stop and eat a bunch of junk food which is confusing your body, it doesn’t know whether to burn calories or save them (Obesity. (2004). In New Harvard Guide to Women's Health, The). Another way to lose weight is a lap band surgery which should only be for the clinically obese because it makes you lose a substantial amount of weight. Like I said if you don’t do your research then you won’t know which procedure is right for you or if you even need to get surgery to lose weight. Some people have tried everything and still can’t lose the weight and that’s when you should start looking into surgeries like the lap band or liposuction. Liposuction is a surgery where they suck out the excess fat so you’re not carrying all that extra weight around. Another thing people are unaware of is that diets can lead to eating disorders if you don’t know what you’re doing. Like the “yo-yo diet” I described above bulimia is an eating disorder almost like that. With bulimia you binge and purge on food meaning you eat a bunch until you can’t eat anymore and then you throw it up on purpose (Healthy Practices: Nutrition. (2008). In Women's Health Care in Advanced Practice Nursing). Healthy Practices: Nutrition. (2008) also states that anorexia is another eating disorder you can get but it’s usually associated with depression or something happening in your life that you can’t deal with. One way for people to decide on the diet that’s right for them would be to talk to your doctor and see how much weight you need to lose if any. When you go see your specialist they will calculate your BMI and get you an eating plan with the right amount of calories for you. If you don’t have the money for that kind of thing and need to do it yourself then you can easily calculate your BMI with these very easy steps. BMI is calculated by multiplying weight in pounds by 700 and then dividing the product by the square of height in inches. Which means if you weigh 125 pounds and are 5′5″ (65 inches) tall your BMI would be (125 × 700)/(65 × 65) or about 21 (Phillips, S. C. (1995, April 14). Dieting and health. CQ Researcher, 5, 321-344). A BMI higher than 25 is something you need to worry about. Once you have your BMI calculated you can decide what the right course of action would be for you.
Some solutions for someone that needs to be a little more educated on a diet would be to have some commercials about where they can get professional advice on dieting. Maybe they can go to their doctors and get some help there. Your doctor will definitely point you in the right direction and will help get you started and may even refer you to a specialist for your weight if need be (Bettelheim, A. (1999, January 15). Obesity and health. CQ Researcher, 9, 25-48).
Another solution would be to advertise what diets out there are just a bunch of bologna. If people see what diets are all lies then they will be able to see which ones are actually good for you. Picking a diet can be really confusing especially if your just now coming into the complicated world of dieting. People really need to do their homework on a diet before starting it. Maybe they can search the internet and check reviews on the diet program. They can talk to their friends and find out what worked for them and decide if that diet is right for their particular weight problem. Do they need to exercise with the certain diet and if so what kind of working out? There’s cardio exercises and weight training exercises and all kinds of other exercises to do which one is right for you? There are ways to get hurt if you don’t know what you’re doing while on the diet. You could develop eating disorders like I described above. There’s diets out there that say you only need to take one pill and the pounds will just melt off without any change in diet or exercise. These diets are all lies and will hurt you and make you gain more weight than before or even make you develop an eating disorder. Some of these diets that are bad for you were once very popular but only because they had a celebrities face on it. A diet that used to be very popular is the Atkins diet which is also a “fad diet”. A fad diet is a diet that becomes very popular though media and has commercials with celebrities stating they lost X amount of weight from so and so diet you can too (The Fad-Diet and Weight-Loss Obsession: Year In Review 2012. (2013). In Britannica Book of the Year, 2013). The course of action is if people don’t take dieting information seriously then they can get hurt really bad just because they didn’t take the time to research the diet they’re on. If people would do their homework and actually take the time to pick a diet instead of picking the fastest way to lose weight then there wouldn’t be so may problems with weight here in America. In conclusion the dieters’ dilemma is a very hard thing to deal with because of all the wrong information out there. For the fellow dieter I say get your information from trusted sources like your doctor and not every diet will be right for you, what worked for your friend may not work for you because every body is different.

This paper will discuss an article published in Time.com (2007, March) by Lindsey Tanner, explaining a recent research study which found that the Atkins diet beat three other diets for weight loss over a one year period. The actual research study appeared in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) on March 21, 2007. Though the findings revealed greater weight loss for the Atkins participants, this paper will discuss the reasons why the study may be flawed, and its results not appropriate for making inferences regarding the public at large.…

The great thing about approaching dieting this way is not necessarily having to eat less. Of course, you will still have to eat the right kind of foods, so do watch what you eat. One thing about traditional dieting is how the whole body goes into survival mode to preserve whatever calories and fat it has. This is especially true if you skip one or two meals. A much more effective strategy is to eat several smaller meals in a day, rather than the traditional breakfast, lunch and dinner. This ensures the stomach stays satisfied throughout the day. There are a number of metabolic diet recipes you can try that you can refer to when you start cooking meals that are appropriate for dieting. Another mistake that some dieters make is skipping breakfast. Unfortunately those who do, tend to overeat later in the day and will likely suffer from sluggishness. By eating breakfast, this allows you to effectively jump-start your metabolism after having fasted overnight. This helps the body burn more calories throughout the day and avoid the sluggishness that is typically experienced by most dieters. Coffee is another key component that most adults already take advantage of. Coffee has long been known to boost the nervous system and keep it more alert and ready to burn more energy and calories.…
