Many of the obvious consequences of obesity are quietly infiltrating our everyday life. When exercises and diets fail to effectively treat people with extreme and excessive obesity, bariatric surgeries are recommended. Two of the laparoscopic surgeries - gastric banding and gastric bypass will be compared in this essay. Analyzing in terms of surgery complexity, dietary modification and potential problems, proved that gastric banding is better than gastric bypass.
Firstly, gastric banding involves the placement of an adjustable ring around the top of the stomach while gastric bypass is a technique that reduces the size of the stomach and reattaches the small intestine (Le Roux et al., 2006), which means there is no stapling of the digestive tract involved in gastric banding. Also, the adjustable ring used in gastric banding surgery is fully reversible, the amount of food that patients are able to consume before achieving a feeling of fullness can be changed postoperatively by adjusting the ring, it can even be removed so the stomach will return to its normal shape (Ogden, 2005). gastric bypass procedure, the surgeon will reshape the stomach, but the shape of the stomach will not be permanently modified in gastric banding surgery.
Secondly, more adjustments on diet are needed for patients who undergo gastric bypass. For example, “patients should avoid foods that are high in simple sugar content and replace them with a diet consisting of high fiber, complex carbohydrate, and protein rich foods.”(Chambers, 2015, p.45), so as to prevent Dumping Syndrome like nausea (Lobo, Edmonds, & Eden, 2006, p.13), but patients do not need to have food abstain after undergoing gastric banding surgery. With the reduction of the size of stomach, patients have to get adequate amount of protein in order to prevent their bodies from breaking down muscles. Gastric bypass causes a higher malabsorptive component in patients’ bodies than gastric banding as the intestines will not be able to absorb as many vitamins and nutrients, deficiencies in iron and vitamin B will cause anemia (Miller, 2015), so nutritional supplements like Vitamin B12 are needed for the rest of patient's’ life once he had the gastric bypass surgery (Yu & Scarborough, 2011), however, patients will not have any nutrition problem after undergoing gastric banding.
Thirdly, gastric bypass causes dangerous internal hernias in which the intestine can be trapped and blocked.
The side effect of undergoing gastric bypass is leaks, which can occur from any anastomosis from stomach to intestines and cause food, saliva or bacteria to enter patients’ abdominal cavity. After gastric bypass surgery, patients’ may not digest food as well as before because the food no longer go along the original path, so it causes flatulence, which means the patients will have excessive farting while gastric banding surgery does not change the structure and function of the small intestine.
To conclude, obesity can inflict life-threatening diseases, comparing gastric banding with gastric bypass based on the surgery procedure, aftercare and long term consequences, the former is better than the
latter.
