Difference Between Cherokee And Lakota Rite Of Passage
The Lakota rite of passage and the Apache rite of passage are both similar and different in the ways that they show what the rite of passage that the children went through. The rites of passage are different because the Lakota rite of passage is more of a mental rite of passage and the Apache rite of passage is more of a physical rite of passage. The Lakota rite of passage for Martin was more of a mental rite of passage because Martin had to deal with the fact that his grandfather was going to pass away some day and that he had to take the responsibility of taking the medicine bag and passing it on. The Apache rite of passage is more of a physical rite of passage for Dachina because she had to go through more physical challenges such as dancing
for 10 hours straight. Therefore, the difference between the rites of passage for both Martin and Dachina was that Martin went through a mental rite of passage and Dachina went through a physical rite of passage.
The Lakota rite of passage is similar to the Apache rite of passage because they both include something about a medicine bag. The Lakota rite of passage included Martin having to take responsibility of the medicine bag from his grandfather which included a broken iron kettle shell, a pebble from the butte, and some sacred sage. Martin had to add some prairie sage as his rite of passage to take responsibility for it. The Apache right of passage included Dachina having to take care of a medicine bag too but the video does not explain what exactly is in the bag or what the bag is used for.
