Difference Between Civil Liberties And Civil Rights
Freedom of Speech, the Right to Vote, Miranda Rights, the Right to Freedom, the Right to Bear Arms, and Women’s Rights. All of these rights were always guaranteed but some were not. Do you know the difference between Civil Liberties and Civil Rights? Do you even know what they are? These two types of guaranteed rights are something citizens should know the difference between. With these rights we have there are some limits to how we can use them.
First, Civil Liberties guarantee freedoms to an individual that limit what the government can do. For example, Civil Liberties can be something from the Bill of Rights. Second, Civil Rights guarantee privileges for an individual that the government has to give you. Civil Rights are more like an amendment to the Constitution such as, Amendment 13, 14, and 15. These Rights were not given to all people from the beginning.

Civil Rights are in place to protect citizen from being treated unfairly. When Supreme Court created the “Separate But Equal Doctrine,” it allowed whites to be superior to any other race. A case in Topeka, Kansas known as, Brown vs Board of Education, helped end this segregation. Soon after African Americans became equal to whites by law, women began to fight for equality. Women wanted to have a job, own land, and be her own person. The 19th amendment allowed that to happen.
Despite the difference between what Civil Liberties and Civil Rights are they all have an impact on society today. If it was not for the thirteenth amendment, we may still have slaves. What if we did not have the 19th amendment? Would women still be inferior to men?
