Difference Between Naproxen And Celebrex
Both Naproxen and Celebrex are NSAID s. Naproxen sodium is an over the counter and a cox-1 inhibitor, whereas Celebrex is available only by prescription and is a cox-2 inhibitor. Both of these medications treat the symptoms of arthritis and are used for acute or chronic pain relief. However, individuals who are unable to take NSAIDS such as naproxen should be advised to take Celebrex due to lesser side effects. The major difference in both of these medications is the side effect it causes. Naproxen has been indicated to cause GI bleeding. It is a better choice of medication for people who have a higher risk of heart attacks or stroke. Studies show that positive aspect of taking naproxen is that it does not increase the risk of these conditions (The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: treating osteoarthritis and pain, 2013). …show more content…
It is an expensive medication and not sold over the counter. According to research article, “celecoxib (Celebrex), is the only COX-2 selective NSAID available in the U.S., and has consistently shown an advantage in lowering the risk of serious ulcer complications in the short-term (six months or less) compared with other NSAIDs” (The nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs: treating osteoarthritis and pain, 2013, p.19). In addition, Celebrex is effective at reducing the risk of ulcers with longer-term use. However, because it is an NSAID, it has been found to increase the risk of heart disease conditions, liver/kidney disease, and blood clotting

For drug administrators, their incentive for using the drug is that the drug’s got to make economic sense. Data showed that for more than 4,300 patients, Angiomax was a more superior alternative to Heparin. Also shown in tables b and c that it effectively reduced the incidences of death by 30% , heart attack by 26%, need for a repeat angioplasty by 14% and major bleeding by 65% (sum of weighted average between high risk and very high risk). Given the average cost per death, heart attack, repeat angioplasty and major bleeding is $8,000 to the hospital, a drug administrator should consider this drug as a cost saver. Product also works much faster, instead of 2-3 hours, it took 30minutes, that might save nurse cost.…

Over-the-counter market growth is attractive to pharmaceutical companies like P&G who successfully changed Aleve from prescription strength to OTC. Once the patent for Pepcid expires in six years there will inevitably be fierce competition. Since the FDA usually takes so long to process an approval for a prescription-to-OTC switch, JJM can go through the process while they still have patent protection for Pepcid and get a stronghold on the market. Also, Pepcid is a treatment for a common chronic problem that is relatively easy to self-diagnose and treat. An OTC Pepcid would…

However, several studies have questioned the cardiovascular safety of Vioxx. The manufacture of Vioxx has announced a voluntary withdrawal of the drug from the U.S. and worldwide market in September 30, 2004. After the company’s own 3 year study was stopped. Two million Americans were taking Vioxx when it was pulled and Merck had said that approximately 20 million people in the U.S. have used the drug. This withdrawal was due to some safety concerns of an increased risk of cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes in patients taking Vioxx during the first 18 months. In the 5 years that Vioxx was on the market over 88,000 and 140,000 cases of heart disease were reported, of those cases 30 to 40 percent were fatal. The records indicate that the action of both Merck and the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found nearly 30,000 excess cases of heart attacks and sudden cardiac deaths that resulted from the use of this drug between 1999 and 2003. Over 300 lawsuits have been filed against Merck, and was expected that thousand more will…

Naproxen sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID, possesses analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Naproxen sodium was added to Jeff’s plan of care to treat his chronic back pain. NSAIDs are absorbed through the GI tract and decreases pain by reversibly blocking cyclooxygenase which inhibits the formation of prostaglandins. Naproxen sodium has an onset of 30 minutes and duration of approximately seven hours (Sutton, 1996). Jeff should be educated to avoid drinking alcohol and taking aspirin while on this medication as well as to avoid taking other meds such as ibuprofen or other meds similar to naproxen which could cause an overdose. Medications that Jeff is currently taking that could cause a drug interaction…

Merck & Co. marketed a drug called Vioxx. The drug was said to have less gastrointestinal problems than its competition – Naproxen. However, Vioxx had considerably more side effects including; heart attacks and strokes (Vershoor,C.C, 2006). Merck and Co. were accused of several unethical acts, therefore, the drugs were pulled from the market in September 2004. Unfortunately, not before 100 million prescriptions were filled. Merck & Co. was also accused of misrepresenting or concealing of study results to doctors. The New England Journal of Medicine reported that previous studies of three patients had been withheld. All three patients suffered heart attacks when taking Vioxx. Sales reps for Merck & Co. were trained to use subliminal selling tactics. Additionally, Merck & Co. only chose biased speakers of their products at educational…

The OTC brand name that I chose for this assignment is Vick’s NyQuil Cold & Flu. The generic version I am comparing this to, is Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief, which is the Albertson’s generic version. Both Vick’s Nyquil Cold & Flu and Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief, have the same exact active ingredients. These ingredients include: acetaminophen (650mg), Dextromethorphan HBr (30mg), and Doxylamine succinate (12.5mg). The price of the brand named, Vick’s NyQuil was $9.99. The price for the albertson’s generic version, Equaline nighttime cold & flu relief was $3.99. Knowing that these over-the-counter medications contain the same active ingredients, I would spend less money and purchase the Equaline nighttime…

First of all, this option gives the company a chance to effectively target. The target customer of Datril should not be overlapped with those of Tylenol. Tylenol was a dominant and well established brand in the acetaminophen market, and was used for a long time by loyal customers who get recommendations from medical professions. It means the existing customers were likely not price-sensitive compared to aspirin customers. Datril is not able to offer an effective differentiated value to these customers compared to Tylenol. Therefore Marvin Koslow should target at aspirin users who were lightly suffering from irritation of stomach lining and who didn’t visit doctors. ‘No side effect’ is more valuable to these customers. As we target these customers, Bristol-Myers’ offering could give an optimal value proposition between customer’s and the company’s value.…

A call to action involving DTCA and regulated profits needs to combine all parties of, manufacturers, patients, providers, government, and public and private health plans. Americans need to become more educated and demand for change from people in higher power positions. Asking your primary care doctor is a great starting place to know what you're paying for. Some may argue that physicians are not reliable enough to speak cost because insurance policies differ, and although this is true doctors should know the difference between generic and new on-the-market medication. Doctors should generally not prescribe medication that their patients cannot afford and try to find alternatives. With many similar drugs, there sure has to be some alternatives…

Representing the side for prescription usage is Dr. Christopher Gacek and Moira Gaul of the Family Research Council. In their article “Plan B: A Grave Threat to Women’s Health” published in August of 2006, Gacek argues, “Birth control pills, which are essentially a lower dose regimen of Plan B, requires a prescription” (Gacek 1). He later goes on to say birth control pills require an appointment with a licensed doctor to determine contraindications, obtain a prescription, and they must provide medical oversight throughout the usage period of the birth control. Birth control pills are available only for medical reasons because they can cause significant or life-threatening conditions such as blood clots and heart attacks. Their contraindicated…

What they do not tell you are the possible side effects that outweigh what good the drug can provide. Some of the potential consequences of these drugs are “excessive weight gain, constipation symptoms, loss of appetite, depression and anxiety.” (GBC) The colon, strained with eliminating waste and toxins from your body, is over burdened with the new rubbish it must eject, and is suppressed as a side effect of the prescribed "healing" drug. This can lead to constipation, and so your colon becomes toxic and this allows the poisons time to seep into other areas of your body…
