Differences Between 1800 And 1850
The north and south US both had their fair share of differences during the time of 1800 to 1850. Some of these differences were minor while others were quit large. One of these differences was the economy. In the Northern part of the US, there were many small farmers, but the North was also becoming more industrialized as well. Looking back in time to the 1800s many factory had started to manufacture products that were earlier inaccessible. This also provided work for people. Meanwhile on the southern side of the country the people there focused more on living of the land and homesteading. All across the south plantations were beginning to grow perfect for raising all types of things.

    A major difference between the north and the south was the legality of slavery, according to compromise of 1820 the line of 36 ' '30 ' north divided this country into two parts, the southern parts contained with a large amount of plantations and slave owners. Up to 1860 only New Orleans could be counted as a "city" with 168 thousands of people in the south. Although the south produced nearly 3/4 of the world 's cotton production, the industrial products were only 10% for the whole US. Slavery, as the foundation of southern economy, further influenced the opinions about race, the politics and the laws, while the north, mostly seen the south as behindhand and as a barrier of the advancement of US economy.     As a consequence of poor farming conditions and a mass amount of immigrants coming into America, the Northern states developed into an economy based on industry and manufacturing. The North was mountainous with rocky soil and rapid rivers. It had long cold winters and mild summers which were not suitable for cash crops such as tobacco, cotton, sugar, rice, etc. They had to focus heavily on industrialization due to the resources they had available to them, such as iron and coal that was abundant.1 Using these resources as an energy source, the North constructed factories that produced textiles, furniture, tools, etc. Since factories were producing a mass amount of goods in a short amount of time, they exported their goods to the West and South. Trade was easier in the North, due to the amount of canals and railroads that connected major cities and towns to one another.2 To keep these factories running, they needed unskilled workers who would monitor the machines, work for low wages and lengthy hours in hazardous conditions.3 Many of these factories used woman and child labor, and unlike the South slavery was outlawed.
