Growing economy and availability of land led to the industrialization of American society, with Northern states expanding on heavy industry and the Southern states sticking with agricultural belief. The Northeast and Northwest states were connected by transportation innovations which furthermore increased the isolation of the South. Although the economy was booming in the Northern states, the South began to decline financially which created more tension that eventually blew up in the Civil War. ECONOMIC ISSUES Industrialization moved at rapid and seemingly different styles within the Northern and Southern states.…
Southerners did not need big cities for they did not have jobs to offer. The North attracted more immigrants than the south because of this. They solidified their plantation economy and developed a defense based on the superiority of the white race. White southern society was separated between yeoman farmers and wealthy planters. Landless white people were ranked…
1. Wilmot Proviso was an amendment proposed, by democrat David Wilmot, to the bill for peace with Mexico in 1846. The amendment stated that all land attained in the treaty with Mexico would be slave free. This proposed amendment would be a debated for years and set out a pressing issue dealing with westward expansion. Southerners thought it was unfair because, “all Americans should have equal rights, including the right to move their property.” Polk tried to compromise by suggesting that we expand the Missouri Compromise line to the Pacific Ocean, with the same rules no slavery in the north of the line and slavery would be allowed south of the line. Another idea that came into play, because of this issue was, “popular sovereignty,” each territory had the right to choose for themselves and with their own representative whether or not they would be free or slave territories. In the election of 1848 both parties tried to avoid this issue as much as possible and a new party formed. They new party opposed slavery as the Free-Soil Party, their candidate was Martin Van Buren. The Free-Soil Party supported the Wilmot Proviso. Although they did not win the election it was an important event in American politics and it showed the lack of capability the current parties had to please the people on the issues. This led to the fall of the second party system.…
The Civil War which lasted from 1861 to 1877 was mainly caused by the diverging society between the North and the South. The North and the South had different goals. There were many factors that led to the war and the chief ones were political and economic differences between the North and the South. The North's aggression to control the South had led to the point where it was intolerable. The issue on slavery was one of the cause of the Civil War. Slavery and slave trades had become a big part of the South's economy. The slaves were needed to work on plantations which helped the South prospered. During the 19th Century, the North worked hard on abolishing slavery which they thought was an disgrace to the Union. Compromises were proposed working toward an end to slavery. One of the compromises was the Missouri Compromise which made Maine, a free state, and Missouri, a slave state, excluded slavery from Louisiana Territory and everything above the 36?30?north latitude. Other compromises such as the Compromise of 1850 did pleased both sides. The Compromise included admitting California as a free state and interstate slave trade to be abolished which went in favour of the North. The Compromise also went with the South when it included stricter fugitive slave laws and New Mexico and Utah were created without slave restrictions. A book called, "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was also published at this time emphasising the evils of slavery. This added tension between the North and the South. The compromises seemed to have settled the issue of slavery but it was just putting back the problem. The North and the South were far from settling the slave issue. Another reason that caused the South to go to war was the difference in economic policies. The North was expanding more in the commercial and industrial side while the South was reliant on agriculture. Cities and factories had developed in the North and in the South, it was still staple-producing and agrarian. The North's industry…
Once in America, there was a time when Eastern South and Eastern North were divided. This division during 1800 to 1850 is one of the important events in American history. There are few reasons for this division such as slavery compromise, pursuit of ideal government, and also the western expansion. Although alcohol still poses a problem today, the situation has drastically improved since this time.…
