There are both many similarities and differences when comparing and contrasting Shakespeare's play Hamlet versus Franco Zefferelli's film version. The most obvious difference between the two is that they are different mediums, one is written and one is visual. People can have varied perceptions from what you thought the appearances and mannerisms of the characters to be while reading the text then when you see them on the screen. Hamlet appeared to be much older in the film than Ophelia, who looked about the age she was intended to be in the play. Gertrude is perceived to be mature and calm in the play, while in the film she is giddy and acts like a young girl. While the play and film are similar in that the movie uses the original old English…

Aristotle defines a tragic hero as a man of noble and high status, whose admirable qualities and basic goodness are undermined by a fatal flaw, which ultimately leads to their own downfall. Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Sophocles’ Oedipus the King both show an excellent example of tragic heroes as both protagonists experience a downfall from a high status due to their fatal flaws. In Hamlet this flaw can be seen in Hamlet as he becomes determined to find his father’s killer. He becomes oblivious to what is going on around him. Oedipus is so determined to find out the truth of who the murderer of the previous king is, such that he is blinded to the truth of what he has done. As seen in their mental stability, their treatment of women and their reversal…

Each prince also had a separation from the one’s that they loved most in order to revenge their father’s deaths. In the process of completing their tasks their uncles also poisoned their mothers, leaving them without any parents. Although their journeys sound quite similar so far, they also have many differences. Toward the end of Hamlet, Hamlet’s love, Ophelia, went mad and drowned; he accidentally killed her father, Polonius; and he also killed her brother, Laertes, when he attempted to murder Hamlet with a sword that had been dipped in a highly potent poison. After all of this had occurred Hamlet took the same sword that killed Laertes and would soon kill him and slit Claudius’s throat and made him drink the drink that poisoned his mother.( Hamlet 174,175) On the other hand in Lion King after Scar killed Simba’s father and poisoned his mother only one more death occurred. Simba and Scar had a spine-chilling battle where Simba killed Scar. After that Simba became king and Nala became queen, and the land returned to its prosperous state. While the ending state of Hamlet’s land ,Denmark, was not told to the…

Simba’s uncle, Scar, killed Mufasa, Simba’s dad. Scar manipulated Simba to believing he killed his father and had him run away from his kingdom leaving Scar to be the king and marring Simba’s mom. Mufasa had villainous ways from the beginning; his obsession to be king showed him to be the antagonist in the Lion King. Hamlet’s uncle was similar, King Claudius also killed Hamlet’s father, took his mother and tried to kill Hamlet. King…

Hamlet: Prince of Denmark tells the story of a young prince who wishes to avenge the death of his father, who is killed by his own brother. Four hundred years later, Walt Disney produced a movie called The Lion King (TLK) with almost the exact same storyline. Many can argue that Hamlet and TLK are complete parallels of each, but it can be suggested that although they share similarities through the purpose and characters, the two works diverge when the motives and actions of the characters are broken down, suggesting different themes for each work; Hamlet: a more psychologically damaged and sorrow theme; and TLK: a more heroic theme.…

William Shakespeare's Hamlet has been remade a number of times in film and in plays. I recently watched two movies of Hamlet directed by different people. The directors add little things to make it their own interpretation of the play Hamlet. Some directors like to emphasize different scenes for instance. The Hamlet movies that I watched were one directed by Kenneth Branagh, and one by Franco Zeffirelli. The directors in each of these had their own way of telling the story of Hamlet.…
