During the early stages, Rome was a civilization that began growing on the Italian peninsula and was controlled by the Etruscans. These people were very powerful and wealthy kings. According to Gill (2017), the Etruscans were violent against the civilians and to instill their ideology it was done through intimidation and fear until the Romans rose up and boot out their ruler in 509 BCE. Gradually it went from a Roman kingdom to a Roman Republic (Khanacademy.org, 2018). Therefore, the Romans replaced the king with two consuls: The Patricians and the Plebeians.
Economic and Political rights
Roman’s society came to be divided into two classes of citizens by birth, the patricians and the plebeians (Gill, 2018). The Patricians came from the first and wealthy landowning families in Rome and were considered as the upper class. The word “patricians” mean “father”, therefore, they claimed to have noble status because they controlled most of the land, religious, and military leadership. This started a civil battle between the rich and the poor demanding for equality for everyone. This difference between patrician and plebeians contributed for the plebeian’s revolt and creating major changes in Rome. However, these changes were not immediately, it took them, almost 200 years for the plebeians to gain more rights (Sullivan, 2011). To attain this, the plebeian’s protested by going on strikes, left the city for a while, refusing to work, and even refuse to fight in the army.
