Differences Between Romeo And Juliet Play And Movie
In the film, Romeo and Juliet directed by Franco Zeffirelli, which takes place in Verona, Italy, the Montague and the Capulet families are endlessly feuding. When Romeo, a young son of the Montagues, disregards family morals by attending a Capulet ball, he falls in love with the beautiful Juliet, a young daughter of the Capulets. After a brief engagement, the two elope with help from Friar Lawrence. Soon after, Romeo is exiled from Verona for killing Tybalt. He hears of Juliet’s death and gallops to see Juliet’s corpse. Romeo drinks a poison, but, unfortunately, Juliet wakes up shortly after. Devastated after seeing Romeo dead; she stabs herself.

Throughout the film and the play, the actors were well represented; however, some actors had more acting flaws than others. One of those being Paris who was played by Robert Bisacco; his acting in the film was not as grand as well as he did not have as many lines in the play versus the film. Juliet’s character, who was played by Olivia Hussey, did not capture my attention when it came to her overall film performance. Ultimately, the acting was skillful for being played in the late 1960s. This goes to show that the play was not directly followed by the film, which caused some misunderstandings in reader’s minds.

Also, when Mercutio was fighting Tybalt, they were play fighting and goofing off in the film for a while. Although, in the play, they immediately started fighting; they did not joke around at all. This scene almost seemed as if it was all fun in games until they were more serious and eventually this ended in Mercutio’s

Another thing that is similar is when they draw their swords in the Zeffirelli version. Primarily, casting decisions had a huge impact on character portrayal and the success of the movie. Romeo was played by a "pretty boy" in both movies to depict sensitivity and youthful attractiveness. Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Leonard Whiting depicted emotions well, but DiCaprio seemed less refined or proper in his movements to put a modern spin on the character. Also, Leonardo DiCaprio's fame aided in the movie's success while Whiting was unheard of in the world of acting. The role of Juliet as played by Olivia Hussey was delicate and graceful. She appeared flawlessly beautiful and fit the classical role perfectly, although her frantic crying fits were played somewhat out of proportion. Claire Danes played the part very well, and was more appropriate for the modern version, her fame aiding in the film's appeal as well. Mercutio was an interesting character in both films, but Harold Perrineau Jr. brought the character's dialogue and actions into today's world. Crazy and loud are some essential ingredients included when most people think about comedy today, and Perrineau depicted these traits to the extreme. His skin color caused the issue of race to be brought up in the movie. It enlightened people into a more modern and open state of mind because black actors were not included in the cast of medieval time films. However, John McEnery's performance in the 1968 version was appropriate for the movie and time setting. He acted like a jester would in…

He is the most responsible based on the fact that he let Romeo stay at his party even after Tybalt warned him that he was there, also he showed his stubbornness by not trying to end the feud between his family and even at times wanting to fight Sir Montague after being told specifically by the prince that their two families must resolve their feud or the will both be banished . Lastly he forced Juliet to marry Paris and even said that if she did not come to the wedding that he would disown her and no longer recognize her as family. These actions prove that Sir Capulet is the real reason for the death of Romeo and Juliet because he forced Juliet to marry Paris, was constantly feuding with the Montagues and he did not remove Romeo from his party.…
