The receiver is the one that receives all memories that had been erased. That position is given only to those who could see further and it was rarely given to anyone. The person chosen before him was a girl, however she was traumatized by one of the memories and decided that she couldn’t resist being the receiver, which is why was then released. Jonas’ father is a Nurturer that works with infants and when they are not fully developed or are exactly identical he must release them. In the movie/book they use the word release as a euphemism to describe death. However, because they get injected they don’t actually know that they are killing and it’s not okay to do that. I find it to be unethical for the Chief Eldest to predisposed whether someone should continue living or not. Once Jonas begins to receive memories he wishes to share them with Fiona (one of his close friends) and the Chief Eldest discovers that, so she goes to the Giver to tell him. However, the Giver backed Jonas up and told the Chief Eldest that it was normal for receiver to do that at first. Jonas began to realize how beautiful it used to be and he began to rebel by not taking the injection. He would trick the injector by getting an apple and putting some of his blood, this would be consider breaking a law in their society. Jonas fell in love with Fiona and kissed her, which was never seen or done in the society, therefore he broke one of the social norms. He convinced Fiona, who was assigned to be a nurturer, to stop taking the injections so she can see what he was talking about. Then, the Giver accidently shared one of the awful memories with Jonas and he left running with the desire to quit. Luckily, Fiona convinced him to go back and give it one more
