Differences In Haiti And The Dominican Republic
Haiti and the Dominican Republic are vastly different counties that have unique systems of classification of race, ethnicity, and governmental structures. The history of the countries of Haiti and The Dominican Republic shape how these countries classify race. To comprehend the demographical differences in Haiti and the Dominican Republic, we need to analyze how historical contexts shape the structures of those countries today. The racial data collected by Haitian and Dominican Republican citizens is based on the socially constructed idea of race, not the biological theory of race. Dark skinned citizens are the minority groups while lighter skinned citizens are considered the elitist's groups. As we explore these distinct variations of race …show more content…
Since the racial classification of race is based on socially constructed concepts, black and mulattos are determined based on skin color. In a study conducted by the Gerald F. Murray on Dominican-Haitian and Ethnic Perceptions and Sentiments, he found that Haitians formulated a system of labels that aids them in distinguishing individuals based on skin color. As found in the observations, these labels are created by “the mulatto elites of Port-au-Prince” who were skeptical about the “racial purity” within their country. These elites believed the best way to address this issue is by creating “a parallel system of complex labels to distinguish among Haitians of slightly different skin colors and hair types” (9). According to the World Factbook, Haiti consists of “95% black and 5% mulattos.” However, the classification of black and mulattoes are viewed as ethnic groups, not necessarily based on race. The reason for this variation could date back to historical time periods. Mulatto is a term reserved for individuals who “are outside of Haiti as a designation for people whose brown skin is known to be a combination of African and European ancestry” where black is referred to as have a darker skin complexion

The similarities between the Haitian and Spanish American Revolutions is that they were started by creoles and neither in the beginning supported abolishment of slavery. Both revolutions were heavily influenced by the Enlightenment ideas. Creole came up with the new ideas from the Enlightenment, such as ideas of human rights and justice. The Haitian Revolution and the Spanish American Revolutions were due to social inequalities. Each declared independence as a result, and later they both had a break down in economic status, due to lack of labor.…

Throughout American politics, two particularly well known categorizations of race and ethnicity have arisen: "Color Dichotomy" and the later "Ethno-racial Pentagon." Each seeks to define and categorize the vast racial diversity America prides itself on. While intending to create clear and fair ethno-racial constructions, there are obvious advantages and weak spots to each for the purposes of analyzing American politics.…

As Dominican, i know that I'm black, i don't deny my African roots. We all black someway somehow. The solution to what is going on in Dominican Republic and Haitia is not becoming one country. On the other hand is to actually stable a government in Haitia the is well develop. Instead of giving $, is to actually go there and building school and hospitals just like how the DOMINICAN REPUBLIC did when the earthquake happend. The constitution in the Dominican Republic (R.D) says that if you are born in D.R. and your mother or father is not Dominican you are not Dominican. Is not like here, if you are born in the USA then you are American (United States citizen). If the United States wants to make D.R. to change their constitution or to make the…

Haitians descents with citizenship were stripped off their citizenship and were thus were mistreated with persecution by the Dominican Republic. Haitians born or naturalize by law were demeanor by the DRCC since the Haitians had already fulfilled the requirements for them to be a citizen. It could be argued that the DRCC commissioned this decision since they had feared that what happened to the Tainos, the natives that originally inhabited DR, could potentially be repeated and now try to prevent any intervention from a foreign country to assimilate its culture. Without a citizenship a person is stateless this therefore means that Haitians in DR are currently stateless. With over 200,000 Haitian descendants denaturalized and only around 24,000 retaining their citizenship there are still over half Haitians in DR that currently stateless.…

If it is so unreasonable for them to introduce these policies, why is it being done? The answer is simply racism. The sad reality is that many Dominicans are still Trujillo sympathizers and believe in the cleansing of our race. Our forefathers are seen as these destroyers of the evil, oppressing Haitians. Trujillo is seen as a nationalist who would be praised by Duarte. We not only hate the Haitians for their past offenses towards us, but for their African heritage. We consider ourselves superior because we have Spanish, white descent, but the ironic, sad reality is that 90 percent of Dominicans have African ancestry. The first slave rebellion happen in the Dominican Republic in 1522. Dark skinned Dominicans take offense at being considered black because it is a characteristic associated with the Haitians. Similarly to how black people in America are often the butt of racist jokes, Haitians are dehumanized in jokes made by Dominicans. Dominicans glorify white skin. In Columbus Square, there stands a gigantic statue of Christopher Columbus, who is idolized, although he stripped the Dominican people of their freedom. This speaks volumes about how race is really viewed in the Dominican…

The racism within these two nations lies not between their economic status nor is it a certain conflict between the two. Even Haitians who were born in Dominican Republic were drafted for the expulsion. Mr. Kartz refers to the racism as “the narcissism of minor differences.” The racism of these two nations goes back to the colonial years when Haiti got its independence almost 60 years before the Dominican Republic by defeating Napoleon. The racism in Dominican Republic is they see that if you are white you have more power and this is how it is everywhere else in the world. Since the blacks were taken as slaves to work on the plantations, it is engraved in the minds of people that blacks are always lower than whites. Trujillo who was a military guard controlled public education and made Haitians hateful as a threat to the Dominican Republic. He did this by insisting that children in school be taught the differences between Haitians and Dominican in terms of how they look. Today most Dominicans grew up with the ideas that Trujillo has engraved in their minds such as Dominicans being proud while Haitians were gross and backward. Interestingly, the racism within these two nations is not based only on skin color but the way they speak, their hairstyles and the cultures that they…

Haiti has a population of nearly 9,801,664, while the total median age is at 21.6 years old. After the 2010 earthquake the preliminary 2011 numbers differ significantly from those of 2010 due to the demographic effect. Birth rate is 23.87 births/1,000 populations which is fairly low due to the lower life expectancy, higher infant mortality, higher death rates, and changes in the distribution of population by age and sex. The death rate is 8.1/1,000 population and was strongly influenced by the earthquake that took a heavily toll on the country.
