Topic: The Different Themes of Winter Dreams
I. Introduction
A. The “Winter Dream” of the story, refers to the American dream that Dexter thinks he wants, but has a skewed vision of. Themes of Love, Society and Class, Ambition and Gender Differences are apparent in this short story.
B. Dexter’s humble origin makes him feel that he has to work harder to be like the other rich socialites, that he wants to fit in with.
C. When reading “Winter Dreams”, a short story by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there appear to be many different themes, such as: Themes of Love, Society and Class, Ambition and Gender Differences.
II. Body Paragraph 1: The Different Themes
A. Theme of Love
1. He “loves” Judy Jones.
2. She leads him on, liking the attention. B. Theme of Society and Class 1. Judy is spoiled enough to complain about a man that told her he was poor to Dexter, and then ask if he was poor. 2. When he said he had a good bit of money is the only time she showed affection toward Dexter. C. Theme of Ambition 1. “He wanted not association with glittering thing and glittering people-he wanted the glittering things themselves.” 2. He goes after Judy time after time and tries to woo her, but still, she only paid attention when he flashed money or wealth. D. Theme of Gender Differences 1. My example of this is the men on the golf course. “By Gad! They ought to put some of these crazy women off the course. It’s getting to be outrageous.” – Mr. Hendricks. 2. At this time the women and men were different in the way that men could go to school and it isn’t odd, but women were expected to stay home, have the babies and look pretty.
III. Body Paragraph 2: Dexter’s humble origin
A. He was embarrassed about his heritage.
1. His father owns the second best grocery store in town.
2. Though his father is well off now, he is still embarrassed to admit that his mother is a bohemian of the peasant class and
