Different Types of Resistors
Different Types of Resistors
Electrical engineering involves the study and development of different electrical technologies, which are used for different purposes. One device that is very common in engineering and in electrical engineering is a resistor. A resistor is nothing but a special electrical component that helps in the induction of electrical resistance in a given electrical circuit. The resistors can be made up of different elements and different materials and it depends on the applied voltage and the applied current. No electric circuit can be complete without the use of resistors in them. The specifications of the resistors however depend on the conduction of the current. We would talk about some of the commonly used resistors.
Carbon composition resistors are among the most commonly used resistors, which usually consist of a special cylindrical resistive element. The resistive element is usually made up of wire leads or metal end caps that help in providing resistance to the flow of current. These resistors are used only in expensive equipments and circuits because these are quite costly as compared to other resistors. When the carbon disks are stacked on top of one another in the resistor system, it is known as carbon pile system. Other than carbon pile system, another carbon resistor that is used is carbon film resistor, wherein carbon films of different shapes and sizes are used depending on the type of resistor and the circuit it is being used in.
Thick and thin film resistors are also special types of resistors used commonly. As the name suggests, thick and thin film resistors have different widths and thicknesses and depending on their thicknesses they are given the respective titles. The thin film resistors usually exhibit higher tolerance and better performance as compared to the thick film ones and that is why they are even costlier. Metal film resistors can also be used after being coated with nickel chromium. These resistors are shown to

    4. Define resistance and describe what would happen to a light bulb if the voltage increased but the resistance stayed the same. Resistance is what slows the flow of electrons in a circuit. As described in the previous question, Ohm’s law states current=voltage/resistance. If we keep resistance the same and increase the force at which the…

Introduction: When an electrical potential exists in a circuit, a current may flow. Current is the flow of electrons in a circuit. Resistance in the circuit slows the flow of the electrons, reducing the current in the circuit. We will use the mathematical form of Ohm’s Law frequently when we investigate electric current and circuits later in this unit.…

Ohm's Law - Using the results of his experiments, Georg Ohm was able to define the basic relationship between voltage, current, and resistance. The equation I = V/R is known as "Ohm’s Law". It states that the amount of steady current through a material is directly proportional to the voltage across the material divided by the electrical resistance of the material. The ohm (R), a unit of electrical resistance, is equal to that of a conductor in which a current (I) of one amp is produced by a potential of one volt (V) across its terminals. These fundamental relationships represent the true beginning of electrical circuit analysis.…

Resistance is the force that slows down the flow of electrons; this can be due to electrons colliding. The total length of the wires will affect the amount of resistance. The longer the wire, the more resistance that there will be. This is also true for thickness of wire; the thinner the wire is the more resistance.…

Electricity is conducted through a conductor, in this case wire, by means of free electrons. The number of free electrons depends on the material and more free electrons means a better conductor, i.e. it has less resistance. For example, gold has more free electrons than iron and, as a result, it is a better conductor. The free electrons are given energy and as a result move and collide with neighbouring free electrons. This happens across the length of the wire and thus electricity is conducted. Resistance is the…

semiconductors which when combined using a method known as hybridisation will form a single complex circuit. First, resistors are mostly made of carbon because it is usually available in local markets at a very low cost and they are very durable. Second, capacitors are commonly made of metal foil because it has high reliability, extreme pulse currents, high AC Voltage and much more. Third, diodes are mostly made of silicon because it is the most abundant element on Earth which means it is cheap to acquire along with being a semiconducting material that requires very little effort to convert. Lastly, semiconductors can be made out of silicon and germanium, but silicon is used more commonly than germanium because it is an easy semiconductor to fabricate at low costs, whilst germanium requires a high purity in fabrication. These components are very important to the circuitry as all of them completes each other and will be able to work properly when they are correctly put in place on the…

Resistance Temperature Detectors (RTDs) are sensors that measure temperature by correlating the resistance of the RTD element with temperature. Most RTD elements consist of a length of fine coiled wire wrapped around a ceramic or glass core. The element is typically relatively fragile, so it is generally installed inside a sheath to protect it. The RTD element is constructed from a pure material, the resistance of which, at various temperatures, has been documented by various international standards institutes. The material has a predictable change in resistance as the temperature varies; it is this change that is used to determine temperature.…

Electronics engineering, [1] also referred to as electronic engineering[2][3] is an engineering discipline which uses the scientific knowledge of the behavior and effects of electrons to develop components, devices, systems, or equipment (as in electron tubes, transistors, integrated circuits, and printed circuit boards) that uses electricity as part of its driving force. Both terms denote a broad engineering field that encompasses many subfields including those that deal with power, instrumentation engineering, telecommunications, semiconductor circuit design, and many others.[4]…
