Cells produce an energy called Kinetic Energy. This causes molecules of the cell to move around and bump into each other. Diffusion is one result of this molecular movement. Diffusion is the passive movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to areas of lower concentration (Martini & Nath, 89). Osmosis is a special kind of diffusion where water moves through a selectively permeable membrane (a membrane that only allows certain molecules to diffuse though) (Martini & Nath 90). Diffusion or osmosis takes place until a balance has been reached. This is the point where the concentrations in both areas are equal and no net movement will occur from one area to another. …show more content…
Materials (Martini & Nath Lab. Manual, p26): To begin the lab, first collect the desired equipment. The materials needed are 2 beakers of water, 2 dialysis bags, 2 M glucose solution, 2 M NaCl solution and a scale. These materials will be used to perform the analysis and support our hypothesis.
Procedures (Martini & Nath Lab. Manual, p26) : 1) Tie the end of both dialysis bags. 2) Fill on bag with 5ml of 2M glucose and tie shut. Fill the other with 5 ml of 2M NaCl solution and tie shut. (Try to minimize air in bags) 3) Weigh each bag and record readings. 4) Place bags in separate beakers of water. 5) Weigh each bag 15 minutes after recording readings.
