Abstract:
Today 's economy is suffering greatly. Since the economy is doing so poorly, employment is hard to come by; this is especially true for people with disabilities. There are different barriers that a person with a disability will likely have to overcome. There is a variety of services people with various disabilities could use and would benefit greatly from.
According to Franklin D. Roosevelt, "We know that equality of individual ability has never existed and never will, but we do insist that equality of opportunity still must be sought" ("Quotes by persons," 2010.) If Americans follow Roosevelt 's advice and provide equal opportunities, then people with disabilities can have more opportunities to be successful. Jobs are hard to come by in today 's society for people in the general population. What many do not realize is how much more difficult it is to find a job when one has a disability.
Many adults wish to gain employment in order to reach their goals and ambitions. Adults with intellectual disabilities have many of the same goals and dreams (Trembath, Balandin, Stancliffe & Togher, 2010). But they find it difficult, sometimes impossible, to gain employment in order to reach their own personal goals. According to Lindstrom, Doren, Miesch (2011), adult success is based on providing financial stability, personal satisfaction, self-sufficiency, and their self-esteem (p. 423). Due to lack of opportunities, these adults with disabilities are unrealized in the employment world due to the high poverty rates. The employment world looks at the gender, household income, race or ethnicity and type of disability of people who are applying for the jobs with or without disabilities (Lindstrom, Doren &Miesch, 2011). The biggest factor for these adults is networking with other people.
