Doodle and Simon Birch are boys born with handicaps that could easily have limited their lifestyle. Doodle’s developmental delay and Simon’s small stature cause both characters to rely on those around them for support and assistance. Luckily, the kindness of Joe Wentworth towards Simon Birch and the consistent attentions of Doodle’s brother, allow both handicapped boys to live lives greater than most of the world could imagine. Swimming, learning to walk, and boxing were a few things that Doodle learned from his persistent brother. Likewise, Simon enjoyed swimming with his friend Joe, and also playing baseball, which was some thing others did not think he could do. Not only did both characters push themselves with the help of their support systems, they also viewed the world around them as a beautiful place, in which they could learn to defy the limitations of their human bodies. The doctors never believed that Simon would amount to anything and he became a handicapped hero by saving a bus full of kids. Doctors said Doodle would never walk and through pain, frustration, and never giving up, he was able to learn to walk by his 6th birthday. The similarities between these characters are uncanny, but one thing that is continuously evident is that…

My first piece of evidence is that Brother knew from the day Doodle was born that he wouldn't be able to do all the things a normal, healthy child would be able to do such as being able to walk and do other things for a long time without getting tired after a long time. When Doodle was born Brother stated that ¨I began to make plans to kill him by smothering him with a pillow¨(Hurst pg.595) and saying how ¨He was a burden in many ways¨(Hurst pg.596) when Doodle was still very young. He was going to teach his brother to walk because he loved him. “ I’m going to teach you to walk… if you don’t keep trying you’ll never learn.” The brother really wanted to help his brother to walk. But the real reason why he wanted to teach his brother to walk was he didn’t want to be ashamed of for having a crippled little brother. “Doodle walked because I was ashamed of having a crippled brother.” This proves that he never wanted to teach his brother to walk because of love, he just didn’t want to be made fun of. This piece of evidence clearly shows that he was ashamed of having a crippled brother so he was going to teach his brother to be a normal kid.…

Pride is one of the traits the narrator represents throughout the story. The narrator was never able to accept his younger brother, William Armstrong also known as Doodle, for who he was. Even earlier in the story, shortly after Doodle was born. His brother's unhappiness with Doodle was mostly because he wanted a brother with whom he could run and play. The thought of a brother who could barely move and probably never walk was rather embarrassing for him, so he taught him how to walk and swim. Another reason of why the narrator is prideful is because towards the end of the story when the narrator was running away from Doodle through the rain and storm, it was his pride and not being able to accept failure. When the storm calmed down the narrator went back and found Doodle dead with blood covered all over him.…

The character in this story, Sister, seems to be in a way jealous and a little selfish, but with good reason, she has a sister, Stella-rondo, who has always been everyone's favorite and everyone would believe everything she said, from her saying that Sister was "one-sided to her,( Stella-Rondos ) "adopted" child. Sister has every reason to not like Stella-Rondo.
