Television

In today modern world television is the most popular and recognized from of media and most homes in the western and developed worlds own one. That small (in some cases rather large) box sitting in your lounge is your connection to the outside world. It is an indispensable item and many of us cannot imagine life without it. As with everything, there are several advantages and disadvantages with the television.
The most important advantage we get by using a television is to get fast access to what is happening throughout the world with the news. Firstly, for many of us the television is our first or only source of news and current events. Most channels have news updates up to four times a day and current concerned programs which take a deeper look at the news that has affected the world that day or week. These programs are usually family friendly meaning that the content is not inappropriate and the fact that it is the easiest form of media that is easy for a teenager to understand makes the youth capable of knowing what is happening around the world.
Another advantage is that people can get vast amount of information and documentaries available for viewing. Like for example National geography channel and discovery channel, where you can learn mostly about everything, but these programs are for everyone there are even programs for kids now, called discovery Kids. It is an exciting way for kids to learn about science and many interesting topics, while having fun. If people are taught in a way that they enjoy, learning is easier.
TV should not be viewed as a way to make people less smart, but a way to interest people in the world around them. It is also the fastest way to improve your knowledge and help you learn something completely new. Where else can you learn about Marylyn Monroe and Winston Churchill in the same afternoon? Many people who cannot afford university or night courses or simply just want a basic knowledge of one particular subject or

Firstly, TV can ‘brainwash’ people, youths especially. The study by the Kaiser Family Foundation shows that children aged between 2-18 years spend an average of 5 hours ½ watching TV every day. That’s around a third of the time an average person is awake for. Watching 3 or four hours of TV everyday can develop your mind to abnormal levels of uncertainty. In fact according to a researcher, three in five percent of children in the US were diagnosed with attention "deficit disorders", this unnatural level leads to laziness, restless, and impulsiveness. Watching long hours of TV also leads the loss of clear eyesight.…

Madame Defarge is a murderer and brutal human being. She has killed many people and will keep killing no matter who tries to stop her. Madame Defarge has a very revengeful mind and doesn’t think about anyone but herself. I hate that Madame Defarge thinks that she has all the power and can do whatever she wants. She doesn't take anyone's feelings into consideration and just does what she feels like doing even if it hurts the people around her. No one knows much about Madame Defarge because she is secretive and doesn’t show much emotion which I admire very much about her. Sometimes I think I can be a little bit like Madame Defarge on some instances. Such as having hatred or wanting diminutive revenge on someone that I believe deserves it.…

When it came to Neil Postman who talked about how television and movies can also double as being educational, I would have to agree with him. There are many shows on television that prove to be a good way to learn about different aspects of life that one may not have known about before. For example, the food network is where one would turn in order to learn more about a certain food dish, while a channel like the history channel would be used to learn about past times and other countries. Then, there are children’s shows like Dora the Explorer, that help children learn Spanish just by watching television for a mere thirty minutes. Postman made it clear that the television was not the only answer to educating people. There still needs to be a classroom environment in order to ask questions and socialize with other people.…

Although television focuses more on the visual aspect than the substantive. I believe that there are two types of learners, those who learn by listening to information, and those who learn best by seeing it before them. For both types of learners TV is perfect. Television has almost everything you would like to learn. For instance if you wish to learn about animals, there is the Nature channel as well as the Animal planet. Granted, there are masses of not educational shows but, if you watch the educational ones you are bound to learn something. The educational shows have a wide range of…

Television is a useful tool. What if a strike was going at the local Savemart? We would not know unless we had a television, a friend who watches television, or went there in person. The news will tell you just that and the weather for the next week so it doesn’t rain while you’re swimming. While watching the National Geographic channel one can travel the entire African Savannah or the Australian Outback or even the deep murky trenches of the Pacific Ocean. It makes geography and biology projects a lot easier. When my Mother first came to America she couldn’t even say hello, but after watching shows like Sesame Street and The Price is Right she began to make brief conversation then it escalated from then. Television is a really useful tool.…

The first reason television is beneficial is because it can be educational. Children’s shows today prove statement. For example, shows like Dora the Explorer and Ni Hao Kai-Lan are teaching the younger generation new foreign languages such as Spanish and Chinese. From my own personal experience working at a pediatrician’s office where the television was constantly playing shows like Ni Hao Kai-Lan and from sitting there with it playing in the background for so long, I ended up learning a lot of words in Mandarin and I wasn’t even paying attention. How much more can children learn when they actually are interested and watching?…
