In The New View of Reconstruction, Eric Foner says that even though Reconstruction failed to meet the goals of Radical Republicans, painlessly rebuild the South, and give the freed blacks complete rights and opportunities, Reconstruction did give African Americans some new chances and a brief taste of a free society. Political, social, and economic progress was made by blacks through the 14th and 15th amendments. Good things came out of the chaotic period of Reconstruction. The South actually was made more democratic than ever before. Public schools for blacks were established, blacks were granted full citizenship, family ties were strengthened, and blacks were able to hold political offices. Many whites in the North and South supported civil rights amendments and wanted to help the blacks and Foner believes that…

During reconstruction there were many changes within the laws that granted African Americans rights that they hadn’t previously had. In 1865, many American citizens of African descent claimed that if they were able to be drafted, then they should have the right to vote as well (Doc. C). Soon after, the Civil Rights Act of 1866 provided citizenship to all former slaves and gave them equal rights, equal adherence to laws and rights to protect property. This was by far one of the most revolutionary transitions for slaves because it was a change in legislation (Doc. F). Furthermore, the addition of three new amendments also tremendously changed the lives of African Americans. The 13th amendment abolished slavery, the 14th amendment granted black people citizenship and equal protection of the laws, and the 15th amendment presented universal suffrage. The first black man was reported voting on November 16, 1867 (Doc. G). In addition, the Force Act of 1870 also helped to reinforce the idea that former slaves were to be treated with respect. Anyone who acted against them, specifically forbidding African Americans to vote by threatening them, would be seen as guilty of felony. The…

There were three amendments added to the Constitution that started a new beginning for blacks. On December 6, 1865, the 13th amendment was to abolish slavery in the United States. The 15th amendment gave the right to vote to all men including African Americans. This amendment was passed by Congress on February 26, 1869, but ratified on the 3rd day of February in 1870. Now, there were some downfalls also in this time period and one of them out of a few is when the black codes were introduced in 1865. The black codes are laws that intended to restrict African Americans to their freedom and forcing them to work in a labor economy based on low wages. America is based upon cheap labor. Whites knew that black males were a lot stronger than them so they took advantage of that. Many slave owners bought and trade slaves to do their work for them so they did not have to do it themselves or pay the slaves for the work they did so they could make more money. If it wasn't for us who was going to do the labor the slaves did during the reconstruction period. Slaves are the ones who got the white men the money they…

The Reconstruction Period from 1865-1877 was a time of great turmoil between blacks and the slave owners of the plantations. The blacks were trying to achieve their freedom from slavery and obtain their right to citizenship. The 13th Amendment passed in 1865 had abolished slavery but the slave owners who felt they had a right to own the slaves as their property and work them as they wish. The blacks in the South would endure much suffering before the deeply racist plantation owners would conform to the laws. They felt the government had no right to change what was working for them to provide an income for their families. They were accustomed to the use of free labor from property they rightfully owned. The North was much more likely to conform to the new law than the South.…

The Reconstruction was kicked off when the 13th amendment merely gave African Americans freedom, but not citizenship or the right to vote. Even with this, the content President Andrew Johnson left the future of African Americans in the hands of Southern states, falling in line with the notion that: “History repeats itself.” The government did establish the Freedmen’s Bureau which was an agency sponsoring African American relief and education, but still, Southerners were giving unreasonable labor contracts and sharecropping to new workers. These, along with the Black Codes, which ruled blacks subordinate to whites, and White Supremacy groups like the Ku Klux Klan, slowly and meticulously pointed towards the reinvention of slavery. Fortunately, Congress instituted the 14th amendment giving African Americans citizenship and the 15th amendment giving them the right to vote.…

The period of Reconstruction, lasting from 1865-1876, consisted of the years after the Civil War during which Americans made efforts to rebuild their chaotic nation. African Americans were arguably affected by this period the most because it was a small step in the right direction towards securing political and economic rights for former slaves. However, the slight improvement of daily life for African Americans didn’t result in much change. Although the North was somewhat successful economically during this time period, the South remained a rural dominated society in which there was a heavy gap between social classes. In the South, the 14th and 15th amendments remained an unfulfilled promise in the South as African Americans continued lives…
