In May of 1865, Andrew Johnson introduced his plans for reconstruction which reflected both Unionism and his belief in state rights. During his presidency, all the land was confiscated by the Union and distributed to the freed slaves by the army also known as the Freedmen’s Bureau. The reconstruction period was from 1865 to 1877. The 15th amendment gave the right to vote to all men including African Americans. This amendment was passed by Congress on February 26, 1869, but ratified on the 3rd day of February in 1870. The Reconstruction was the period during which the United States began to rebuild after the Civil War, lasting from 1865 to 1877. It was to repair the North and the South politically, economically and socially. After the Civil War, the South’s economy was completely ruined and needed help from the Union government; which they were trying to stay way from. The Reconstruction can be evaluated both as a success and a failure. Its successes were the restoration of the eleven confederate states back to the union, giving African-Americans (ex-slaves) their freedom and rights and providing aid to the freed slaves and poor whites. Its failures were the Anti-African Americans groups such as the KKK, the Black Codes, not protecting the rights of the freedmen and the southern corruption. Although African-Americans were freed and gained their rights because of 13th, 14th and 15th amendments, and the ex-eleven confederate states came back to the union, the Reconstruction was more of a failure than a success.…

This period lasted from 1865-1877 and was mostly evident in the southern states. This was an important time in the history of the United States because it started a discrimination that turned fellow citizens against each other based on their appearances. This went directly against the Constitution which stated, “All Men are Created Equal” which is ironic because the Civil War was started because each side believed they were more constitutional, and the end result was the opposite of constitutional. In the long run, Reconstruction helped black people move closer to accomplishing to the American Dream. But short term,…

However, again Southern state legislatures refused the approval of the 13th Amendment and also began to deny African Americans the right to become full citizens of the United States. Surprisingly, Congress began to widely support the decision to grant blacks full citizenship. Nevertheless, southern Whites adopted “Black Codes” that were designed to regulate certain activity a freed slave could participate in. The codes would vary from state to state but were similar in more ways than one. Ex-slaves would be subject to enter uncompromising labor contracts with harsh violation consequences such as trading off dependents to pay off fines or corporal punishments.…

As well as the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 which freed all slaves, the first main changes to improve the rights of the African American’s were the thirteenth, fourteen and fifteenth amendments and the two civil rights acts. The thirteen amendment abolished slavery in America (unless as a punishment) in 1865. The fourteenth amendment in 1868 granted citizenship to recently freed slaves, and protect their civil liberties. However, this had little effect in the south and many states refused to ratify the amendment. The fifteenth amendment meant the government couldn’t deny citizenship on the grounds of race as well as allowing the first African American vote and blacks being elected into public office (however, this caused violence against black voters.)…
