Discussion about males and females leadership style
Critically discuss the leadership style of one male and one female leader from the world of work or business with reference to the literature on gender, management and leadership

For this discussion I am going to pick two leaders one being a female and the other being a male. One of the female leaders which I have decided to choose is Ginni Rometty who is the chairman, president and CEO of IBM and one of the reasons for why I have chosen this leader is due to the fact that I personally feel that she has her own personal style of leadership which I strongly agree with. The male leader which I have chosen is Barack Obama who is currently the president of United States America and I feel that he brings a very unique style of leadership skills to the business which I am going to get into dept. more about during the discussion. The growth of female’s jobs within the United Kingdom has had an increase in growth, especially in the sector of part time and low sector jobs however a few high professional jobs has also increased such as female leaders in certain businesses. Gender differences in leadership styles has been one of the most looked at studies in the field of leaderships which makes it very important for us to understand in today’s world and to look at the different styles that both females offer compared to males in today’s world as jobs and responsibilities in the world is vital. One thing to remember is that even though women have been a large increase within the work force, very few female leaders are positioned.
Ginni Rometty is an inspirable leader for IBM and other females who is now a world leading company who competes and is at the same rank as Microsoft, apple and google. It is the 19th largest company in the world with revenues up to $107 billion and Ginni Rometty was named CEO in January 2012. One of the ways in which Ginni does her leadership style is by thinking long term which is something her and IBM does in order to succeed and going forward.

    Carbonell, J.L., & Castro, Y. (2008). The impact of a leader model on high dominant women’s self-selection for leadership. Sex Roles ,58,776-783. This study had women observe a leader model of either gender model a task they would have to complete. The study looked at effects of gender role model in the decision of high dominant women to be leaders, given a masculine task to complete with a male co-worker. The hypothesis states that women would become leaders at a higher rate when a woman model is given rather than a male. The research took a total of 190 students: 95 women and 95 men. Each individual was given the California Psychological Inventory, measuring: impression, communication, and dominance. This study looked at dominance in particular. Only 15 pairs were exposed to women models. The study observed 2 groups to support or reject their hypothesis. Focused groups were made of high dominant woman paired with a low dominant man with a female model, and high dominant woman paired with a low dominant man with a male model. A chi square analysis showed a correlation between leader model and leader development, “The results are that 60% of women took the leader role when given a woman model compared to 20% in male model” (Castro, 2008). The study concluded in the presence of a female model, high dominant individual would be the leader. The gender of the leader model did not affect leadership for males. I believe this study shows importance of woman leader models in professional fields. The lack of exposure of woman leaders for women reduces the chances that they will take on leadership roles.…

    Female leaders have many of the same qualities as male; especially, an ability to set high goals and inspire others to fulfill them. Women are different in some ways that make them valuable additions to the team. They tend to be more motivated by the meaning of their work than men, who focus more on compensation and job titles.     If leadership is based on personalities and attitudes, I strongly believe that there are differences in leadership abilities and approaches when considering male and female roles. When considering the traits of males compared to females as leaders, men traditionally are more aggressive and assertive than women.
