It causes millions of cases of diarrhea each year. Anyone can get it and most people recover without any complications, unless they become dehydrated.
Causes of Viral Gastroenteritis
There are four viruses that cause Viral Gastronenteritis namely:
Rotavirus- leading cause of gastroenteritis among infants and children. This infections are most common in infants 3-15 months old. It causes vomiting and watery diarrhea for 3-7 days, along with fever and abdominal pain. Also infect adults in close contact with infected children, but milder.
Caliciviruses-cause infection to people of all ages. Norovirus is the most common calicivirus and the most common cause of viral gastroenteritis in adults. It's usually responsible for epidemics of viral gastroenteritis. Outbreaks occur all the year but more frequent from October to April. People infected experience nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fatigue, headache, and muscle aches. Symptoms appear 1-2 days after exposure and last 1-3 days.
Adenovirus- infects children younger than 2 years old. Of the 49 types of Adenoviruses, one strain affects the gastroenteritis tract, causing vomiting and diarrhea. Symptoms appear 8-10 days after exposure, last 5-12 days, and occur year round.
Astrovirus- infect infants, young children, and adults. Causes vomiting and watery diarrhea. Symptoms appear 3-4 days and last 2-7 days. Symptoms are milder than the symptoms of norovirus or rotavirus infection. Infection occur year round
